Tuesday 4th November 2008 - Maltaaaaaaa!

Another sunny day and the first of the three days we would have a hire car for.
Now Wac has a tendency to over stress things and generally people don't take what he says literally but this time they did!
Let me explain.....on Sunday when he enquired about and then booked the car he wanted to get value for money and was hoping to get a reduced rate (which he did) and he was very enthusiastic about impressing the points that he only wanted a 'basic' car, 'nothing fancy' it didn't need 'air con' and had to be as 'cheap as possible'.
Ok me thinks, they have some of those lovely new Peugeot 107 and similar in the group 1 which is the cheapest range all car hire firms have so that'll do me. Wrong!!! The hire chappie took us outside and proudly showed us this tatty erm I mean natty little Maruti and went to great lengths to assure Wac it met all the criteria he had insisted on!!

I opened the passenger door and tentatively tried to sit on the seat without actually sitting on it! Mission impossible. All I could think about was although it looked clean I knew it wouldn't be after having had hundreds of sweaty, sun lotioned bodies for the past 20 years pressed against it, ok I may exaggerate slightly...19 years! driving round half dressed in the searing heat.
My handbag never made contact with the floor in the whole three days.

I nearly choked when the chap showed us the choke!! I can't ever remember me owning a car that had a manual choke in the past 25 years so was agog to see one now in today's day and age of everything modern.
Wac was smitten and I hate to say this he and the car went very well together.

Now we had transport we needed a place to go. I made the decision of us going to Ta'Qali which is full of nissen huts that have been converted into craft shops. It is on what used to be the original RAF base.
We took the back route in and unusual for me I insisted Wac park round the back of a building in the shade which meant I had a little distance to walk, further than if he'd used the car park but that would have meant people would have seen me getting out of the shed on wheels!

Next stop was the medina glass place and horror of horrors Wac parked right next to an ice cream van that was teaming with people wishing to purchase refreshments. Oh my we    were     seen!    Big style!  pmsl Having been seen by lots of people who were probably feeling sorry that we could only afford a car like that I decided that there was only one thing for it I would have to buy the biggest and most expensive piece of glassware to prove we weren't as 'beam ends' as the car displayed us to be!
I swiftly rethought that plan though when I saw that a small paper weight was £14!
I did purchase a couple of bookmark calendars which I thought were a good idea.No they weren't made of glass!

Off again in the erm..car again and we went up to Mdina and lost/parked the car on a croft just slightly away from the centre.

This place used to be the capital of Malta and it's name means Silent City
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v69mxOX8Y48 interesting video showing the inside and outside of the Silent City. There is even a nunnery with 6 nuns living there.
From the walls of the bastions at the rear there is a fantastic view point and you can see for miles.
The streets are all curved so that people could hide from arrows being shot at them.

In one of the little shops I bought a bowl. Since our bedroom was finished I have been on the lookout for a bowl to put my brushes in that I use when drying my hair and where did I find one, here, well not here but in Malta! I deliberated about buying it as it meant being careful carrying it home on the plane but it was the right colour ie burgundy/red with a gold trim so I just had to have it!

Next stop was the Blue Grotto which is on the south west side of the island. There is a large car park at the top and a bit of a walk down a steep incline that has a few shops and cafes en route. By this time it was approaching 2.30pm so we decided to have lunch. We had hoped to be seated upstairs in a particular restaurant that has fabulous views over the bay but the upstairs part was closed. We sat on the low level balcony though which was quite nice as it still had a reasonable view. I think I had a mixed veg and rice concoction for my meal which was lovely.

When we had eaten we walked down to the part where the boat trips go from in summer and at weekends. The sea was quite choppy that day and I wouldn't have wanted to go on a boat had they been operating.

Wac decided he'd have a 'sunbathe' and I sat looking out to the sea...I'd left my book in the car. Grrr!
It was going up to 4 by then and we knew we only had about 45 mins of the sun and daylight left so we made the most of it sitting on the rocks overlooking the med until it began to get cooler.

By the time we got back to the hotel it was dark, we were tired so had a quiet  evening in......

Morning LadiesI am just giving Bill another lesson in "joining" our group pro tem.

I have printed off all your news Tigs as I want to read it at my leisure, and I am in a hurry this evening we have had so much to do and get Jasmine ready and take her down to Tracy's as our early start in the morning for the hospital would wake her up and then we would have to get her ready for school and as I have to be at the hospital at 7 and she does not have to be off to school till after eight it would not work.  Bill is taking me to the hospital.  Oh everything is hospital SORRY

My friend is still having trouble with Scotts girlfriend even though the lawyer has told the family that they really do not have any say.  So I have been speaking with her a lot.  I feel so helpless, I just hope listening is a help.

I will miss you ladies, but hopefully Bill will bring in all the news, and hopefully he has taken in how to give you daily bulletins and a few words from me in response to your "sign ins"

Will go now and find my clean nightdresses-Oh the thought of wearing one of those hospital ones with no strings at the back

Take care of yourselves

Hello ladies,

How sweet of Bill to agree to keep us posted about you Ann!  Thanks Bill!!  I can imagine the hospital is heavy on your mind Ann, so you talk away.  My thoughts will definitely be with you tomorrow, and my prayers for a quick recovery are already in the mix
I am sure having you to listen is quite helpful as there really is nothing more you could do for the family.  Sounds like the g/f needs a good talking to.  I am sure she must be heartbroken as well,  but when someone is so determined on creamating someone,  that puts a red flag in front of me, especially with the young mans symptoms prior to his death.
Good Luck my friend,  I will miss you for a few days, ( I don't expect you to be down long)
  Thanks again Bill!

I am glad you can believe me about your card Tigs, lol
Tim asked why I had not opened it as it was from England, lol.
....and NO, that cold sore looked more like a creature had affixed to her lip,  sorry but it just was gross

I cannot believe you had to tour around in that  old abused car, and pay for it.  KUDOs for being a (team) player, lol
I take it your bowl made it home safely.  While Joe and I were on our trip I had to buy a LARGE purse to carry home a few of our souveniers as our bags were packed to the brim.  Nothing big or expensive,  just little trinkets things for everyone.

Speaking of your books,  I saw on Oprah the other day a new device that holds hundreds of books, called a Kimball ( I think)  She was so excited about it, as you can download any new book in seconds, and many other features about it were just perfect for someone who did a lot of reading.  Looked to be about the size of a small paperback.

I am going to take Mike and Ericka to the marina and show them the big boats that they charter out for deep sea fishing.  Then I am going to stop on the way back and drop them off at the employment agency and tell them to give a call when they are done there and I will go pick them up. lol SNEAKY I am!  But I think these 2 kids need a little boot in the rear to become accomplished.

Farmeress,  I hope your doing well....
Sweet,  WHERE O WHERE ARE YOU????????
Yvette,  see you on facebook, lol
Julie,  Cheers to your family, I hope your all well.
Lilbabs,  have a wonderful day!  Don't work too hard

Later girls,  take care of yourselves!!
  ANN,   XO
