This is a poem I wrote in memory of my dad for his birthday 9 months after he died.
The Greatest Man We Ever Knew
Smiling eyes of the oceans deepest blue,
Loving and tender, but could look straight through.
Handsome and bold,
Never crude or cold.
Witty and clever,
Through any endeavor.
And that wink with a smile,
He gave with such style.
Just his subtle way to show he was proud,
He didn't have to say too much out loud.
Somehow we knew,
That little wink was our clue.
Oh what a huge heart,
Being a REAL MAN he made into an art.
Those road trips of gold,
What stories would unfold.
Loyal and faithful til the end,
Such a reliable, respected friend.
On a sunny June day,
I heard my uncle say.
"A child so ornery and mean,
Grew into the best man I've ever seen."
A husband, a daddy, a papa you know,
to love us all deeply was his to bestow.
Though he's been taken...
His memory has not been forsaken.
As for Marlena, and Connor,
My sister Nanci and Me...
If you look closely you will see.
In our hearts and in our faces,
Strong values and familiar traces.
If there's one thing on earth where we do agree,
Proud to say it's Daddy and Papa in me.

Daddy, there isn't a day that goes by
that we dont miss you or think about
you. We will never be able to express
how honored and blessed we were
that you were in our lives. Your family
thanks God everyday that we had someone
so special and we can't wait for the day
when we see you again in heaven.
