Not a very busy town anymore...I think that the "one horse" broke out of it's corral and ran...but a quiet community. We have our own school system, only 140 students in pre-K through 12th. Only a small Post Office, Tire Shop, and Gas Station remains. Plus our little library, that thrives on community involvement to keep its doors open and operational with new materials. We live near Ottumwa, Osceola, Oskaloosa, and Des Moines, just about the same distance in all directions. The summer stays busy with surrounding towns holding festivals, thrasher reunions, the State Fair, and we are surrounded by lakes. Our little town, still survives today, thanks to the rail road coming through her belly, many towns, such as Zero, soon died out, because of the tracks laid too distant from their resources. Our little town, lies on the tip of extinction, but fortunately, our city council and the patrons have pulled together to try to restore her grandness, instead of letting her be a forgotten memory of days gone by. Russell once had an opera house, in the days when the rail road, first laid its line. There is so much history. It is where my husband grew up. So we brought our twins back to his stomping grounds to be raised with wholesome values, in a small community. |
