My Dearset Priestesses,

You have come into a time when you now need to take deeper looks at your pathworking.  In Second Degree training, you will not have a lot of the text as you had in first degree.  This year you will learn and be expected to be active in L&S as you learn to guide and lead.  You will be learning a bit more of the deeper mysteries and find out what it is to be part of the inner cirlce of a coven.  This is a deep responsiility and one that takes commitment.

You are not just a name on the internet, you are a priestess in a working coven.  You will act and do what is expected in any coven...and by doing so, will be training to eventually be able to know just how to take up the sword yourself in third degree...But for now...let's start at the beginning ...

Yes it is time ....

You have found many things for a typical BoS since you started your path...you have saved them online and have binders full of information...but now, you must make one that is YOU...as a Priestess.  You will make this BoS from scratch...so you will need a few things...

You can buy a binder and take the easy way out...
but
I am hoping you will take time to make this one that will shout that it is YOUR Book of Shadows every time you see it.  I think you will be amazed at the magick that will glow from it ...

This assignment starts by making the cover

For this you may want to go to Lowe's Home Center or some other home do-it-yourself store.  You will need two pieces of wood...you should make it about a quarter inch in thickness but not wider than half inch...... The board can be a 10 or 12 inch board and you will want to have it cut a bit longer than your paper that you will end up using..(I suggest the board be 10" X 12"  for standard parchment)

Choose a wood that is special to you. WHen you go to that store...look closely at the boards...look at the grain and feel the wood.  Will it be oak...pine...maple...hickery...it is up to you... Remember when you pick it out that this will be with you for a lifetime...

(the Home Center will cut it for you if you do not have a way to cut it at home. ) Have one board cut so that you have a 2 inch piece cut off the side that you will place the hinges.  Also you will need a drill to put the holes in for your metal dowels that will go through your whole book. ( this part will be as you decide later...as some like to put leather lacing rather than the dowels but I do like the sturdiness of the metal rivets.)

Other things to pick up for this project would be:
  • Drill
  • Hammer
  • Carving tools
  • Sand paper
  • Stain
  • Glue
  • Leather Lacing (optional)
  • Leather or material if you wish to cover it with a binding
  • Batting (for a soft binding)
  • Glue
  • Hinges
  • Rivets that screw together...(a person at the hardware store may be able to help find this.)
  • Parchment
  • Hole punch
  • Corner embellishments (optional)
  • Scrolling embellishments (optional)
  • Ribbon
  • A special pen to be used only for this book

(this is a simple sample of one book)

I have seen the soft metal that we used to play with as children for the hammered tin pictures to be used to make wonderful sigils for these books.. Some will paint rather than carve...this is yours so this part will be what you decide to do...so use your imagination.  This is not something that will be put together in a day...you may take weeks to get it done...and just realize that it should not keep you from writing on the parchment that you can easily keep in a temporary binder until you have finished the outside of your magickal Grimoire.

This will  be part of your development and only things you have actually performed will go here...you will hand write things..or if you wish to type your words and them print out in a fancy font, you can do this, altho, I hope you will had write your entries as it makes it so much a part of you and your personal magick.

This year , you will be writing chants and rituals that you will perform ...these things will go into your Grimoire. YOUR CREATIONS...this is what this book is...totally you.

You will put feelings here as well as poetry and visions given to you in meditation.

The other binders and reference books will also be things you use but this one book will be a roadmap of your degree workings as well as your magickal path starting NOW.

So Good luck with this amazing start to your second degree...and feel the magick that is truly within you.

Brightest Blessings
~ Lady Majyk ~
