The Major Arcana This group of cards have the most power if you will. They consist of 22 cards that predict everyday happenings and outweigh any other card in a spread. They have a greater impact symbolizing some aspect of the human experience. They can direct patterns. It can show meaning to your concerns Each card has a name and number. Some of the names can be easily interpteted like Justice or Temperance. Others can represent a personality or individual. There are also cards such as the moon or star that are more astronomic and mysterious. The numbbers have numerlogic meanings too and can play an important role in reading the spread. I have read may times that the major arcana tells a story of sorts of our lives. Starting with the Fool and ending with the World. We begin with the Major High Arcana and will go through the variest possibilities of each card. We will learn of the Astrological influence as well and posted memory guides per card. I will using the Rider Waite deck in reference to the discriptions. Learning The Major Arcana , the Major Arcana form a seperate pack from the Minor Arcana. Twenty- two pictorial Cards make up the Major Arcana, each highly symbolic of different states and conditions of mans spiritual life. Our goal is not totry to learn all the individual symbology contained in the Major Arcana, for each Tarot Master and the artist working with him endeavors to include all that he considers significant intepreting each card, but we will strive to understand the symbology before us in the Rider Waite Deck, which I found to be the clearest and most profound to work with. Major Arcana Mystery of the Soul: The Major Arcana contain the mysteries of the soul and it's purpose here on earth. Each Card can open fast demensions of spirituality to you if you study it with diligence and purity of purpose. Together these 22 cards with take you into realms of higher consciouness and reveal vistas of estoric knowledge that remain veiled to those who choose the more mudane paths of life. Sinc ewe will be dealing with spiritual aspects here, the proper way to approach the study of the Major Arcana each day is with a prayer. The daily prayer will uplift your thoughts to a higher level and open a gateway to the peace and comfort that come with a spiritual kinship to the Tarot. Our first exercise therefore is this Daily Prayer. Exercise: 1. Say the prayer slowly and thoughtfully, with the appropriate card before you. Look at the picture and become totally involved with the symbols portrayed, for the picture is you- your Higher Self. The Fool Daily Prayer : O THE FOOL Dear Heavenly Father/Goddess, Through Thy divine grace let me feel the Holy Spirit within me. Grant me the innocense of the Fool, help me to let go of earthly fears and walk in peace with Thee this day. Let my ears listen only to Thy higher wisdom. Let me walk freely, knowing that I am protected in Thy love. I long for the innocent faith of a child, and because I an a child of God/Goddess I know it is my birthright. As I walk into this new day I pray that I will always be aware of Thy Holy presence. I know that only fear seperates me from the comfort of Thy define love. This day I will try to express my love for Thee, dear Father/Goddess, in all I do and say. i will rid myself of fear, which is the shadow of man, and with Thy Holy blessing, walk in heavenly light. Amen/ Blessed Be. The Story of Life Think of the Major Arcana as a story- the story of life-with 22 chapters. To fully understand the story, you must become involved in and study each chapter thoroughly, not only for itself but also for it's relationship to the chapters that precede and follow it. Each card is a seperate chapter in the story. Merely knowing the title of each chapter is not enough; you need to understand thoroughly the content of the chapter- the characters and situations involved. This is the only way to fully appreciate what is conveyed in the whole story. The conscious mind is not able to grasp fully the symbolisim of the Tarot. You must relax and allow your subconsious to obsorb the message contained in the story of the Major Arcana, for it is an extension of the physical into the spiritual-another demesion of comprehension. It cannot be adequately described, for it is built on foundations of the subconscious- its reality is within the Higher Self. Through meditation and a sincere desire to understand the timeless message of the Tarot, we can come to a deep, personal comprehension of our own spiritual framework- who weare, what we have built for ourselves and why, and where are we going. The Story of O The Fool We begin our journey with the pure, untouched soul, not yet of this world. All wisdom and knowledge, containing the total essence of God.Goddess, are contained int he innocense of a newborn baby, physically present in the world now, yet still enveloped in the Higher Consciouness. THE FOOL BEGINNING SPONTANEITY FAITH APPARENT FOLLY ACTIONS beginning entering a new phasestriking out on a new path expanding horizons starting something new beginning an adventure going on a journey heading into the unknown being spontaneous living in the moment letting go of expectations doing the unexpected acting on impulse feeling uninhibited surprising someone feeling carefree having faith trusting the flow staying open letting go of worry and fear feeling protected and loved living in joy recapturing innocence believing embracing folly accepting your choices taking the "foolish" path pursuing a pipe dream being true to yourself taking a "crazy" chance trusting your heart's desire OPPOSING CARDS: Some Possibilities Hierophant - following convention, routine Death - ending, closing down Devil - feeling cynical, lacking faith Two of Swords - blocking off experience, feeling tense, holding back Four of Pentacles - order and regularity REINFORCING CARDS: Some Possibilities Hanged Man - having faith in what is, going with the flow Star - innocence, faith, trust Judgement - rebirth, new starts Three of Wands - expanding horizons, going into unexplored territory DESCRIPTION As Card 0, the Fool lies at the beginning of the major arcana, but also somewhat apart from the other cards. In medieval courts, the court jester was someone who was not expected to follow the same rules as others. He could observe and then poke fun. This makes the Fool unpredictable and full of surprises. He reminds us of the unlimited potential and spontaneity inherent in every moment. There is a sense with this card that anything goes - nothing is certain or regular. The Fool adds the new and unfamiliar to a situation. The Fool also represents the complete faith that life is good and worthy of trust. Some might call the Fool too innocent, but his innocence sustains him and brings him joy. In readings, the Fool can signal a new beginning or change of direction - one that will guide you onto a path of adventure, wonder and personal growth. He also reminds you to keep your faith and trust your natural responses. If you are facing a decision or moment of doubt, the Fool tells you to believe in yourself and follow your heart no matter how crazy or foolish your impulses may seem.

EXERCISE 1 1. Select the card and place it before you. 2.Relax your mind and body and focus your attention on the card. allow your mind to drink in every detail of color or shape. 3. say the approprate Prayer of Invocation (daily Prayer "0 The fool") 4. As you recite the prayer, absorb every detail of the card until you feel ready to hold the picture in your Inner eye. Then close your eyes, bring the card up to your forehead, and recreate the picture in your mind in full detail. 5. Feel the picture in your Inner Eye take on length and depth, like a three demensional movie. As the view expands and the borders of the picture recede, gently Push yourself forward with your solar Plexus until you enter the picture, like going through a doorway. 6. As you enter this new demension, become sensitive to life and movement all around you.. fell yourself become enveloped in this new world which no longer is a picture. the figures are no longer still; you are now in the world of the Superconsciousness and everything and everyone is real. 7. You are now a part of this world, life is vibrant all around you, colors are bright, everything is moving and real. You can feel the breeze, the grass underfoot, the warmth of the Sun. You smell the scent of flowers and look all around you, absorbing all you can. 8. Start to walk amd become totally involved in what is happening around you. Listen and hear voices speaking, introduce yourself to the character or characters in the card, converse with them. Treat them as real, living people, but be as natural as possible. Be respectful, but do not be intimidated by thier high natures. (ex. like in the cards of The High Priestiss, The heirophant. or when entering the card Of Death, The Devil, The Hanged man, etc.)It is important not to be afraid of these figures. Realize that they have their functions to perform God's/Goddess's plan, know the God's/Goddess's love and protection is with you and that they cannot harm you in any way. 9. Let the vibrations of this spiritual plane permeate your whole being and feel the rejuvenation of the higher forces. 10. When you become aware that your conscious mind is bringing you back, gently Push from your solar Plexus, keeping your eyes closed, and slowly withdraw from the spiritual world. When you feel yourself back in your original mediating position and the life movements has faded back into the card, slowly allow the image of the card to disappear from the Inner Eye, like a fade-out in a movie. allow the sounds and feelings of this world to return to your consciousness before opening your eyes. 11. The meditation is over. Now, before the images fade from your memory, enter your impressions in your "Tarot Log"-all the details you can remember, then your analysis of these experiences. 12. Repeat this exercise with the same card until you feel thoroughly familar with it. Don't try to do too many times at one time, perhaps once or twice a day. Try this as a card per week, until we gather the total 22 of the Major Arcana and then randomly review them. |

In order to help you understand the symbology of the Tarot more throughly, I have prepared wht I call "mentors' for each card in the deck. I have broken them down into Mentors for the Minor Arcana, the court cards and the Major Arcana, I suggest you study them. The term "Mentor" means "wise loyal advisor, a teacher or coach". The purpose of these Tarot mentors is to bring together in an organized fashion a colection of estoric knowledge about each of the 78 cards in the deck. You will also be able to see each card relates to other occult studies such as Astrology Gnothology, and Cabala. Each mentor contains the following types of information. 1. Key 2. Reverse key 3. Memories 4. Guidelines. 5. Meditation 1. Key: The Key is used when the card is in the upright position. It is an immediate gide to clarifying the card and it's symbol. However, it should be considered merely as an aid in promoting your sensitivity and not as the only definiation. You cannot rely wholly on the Mentors for the interpretaion; they should be used only as a guide in developing you own modus. operandi. 2. Reverse Key
When the card is reversed, the interpretations differs. This does not necessarily mean that the interperation of the card is negative. Learning the reverse keys should be your goal as soon as you have mastered the upright key. The reverse key, like the upright key, is intended to stimulate your psychic and spiritual energies- astarting point from which to eventually reach your own individual interpretations. 3. Memory This is a simple two-line rhyme for each card, in both upright and reverse positions.If you have difficulty memorizing the Keys and Reverse Keys, you may fid it easier to master these little ryhmes, which convey the same message as the Keys and Reverse Keys. 4.Guidlines
Before making full use of the Guidelines, it is necessary for you to have thoroughly mastered the lessons and exercises. The Guidelines are intereptional possibilities which must be combined with the sensitivty you have developed up to this point. Always go with your intuition, whether the guidleines agree or disagree; but if you properly developed your inner awareness, your feelings most often lead you to the correct guidline for the occasion. Remember that a divination is like reading the story of someones life. When you feel assured that you can tune into the correct Guideline and find that it fits meaningfully into the picture the cards are disclosing, you have reached the necessary level of sensitivity for divination. Until this level is reached, you should never practice serious divination for another person; to try to guess which guideline to use is obviously neither moral nor ethical. |

Daily Prayer Meditation for Magician Exercise: 1. Say the prayer slowly and thoughtfully, with the appropriate card before you. Look at the picture and become totally involved with the symbols portrayed, for the picture is you- your Higher Self. 1 The Magician This day, dear lLord, my needs weigh heavy, filling my heart and mind with apprehension. There is so much I want to accomplish and I am in need of Thy divine strength. I know that all I have to do is to reach out and let Thy love premeate my whole being, and all is mine. If I forget, dear Father, let me feel the comfort of Thy everslasting love, let me recognize thee in everyone I see today. When I am called upon to make decisions that effect not only myself but others, let me first come to Thee for heavenly reassurance. May I ever be conscious that success is only of this earth and that all I do should be with Thee in mind. Thou art ever with me, in every decision, every hope, every hurt. I pray that Thy presence bless all I do today. The Story of 1 Magician Before man are the tools of Higher Consciouness. As he becomes involved with the material plane, he is given all he needs to achieve success here on earth. As he develops his ego, he must endevor to retain his spiritual equilibrium and use his God-given toos to reach his heavenly goal. Traveling on his way, the Fool first encounters a Magician. Skillful, self-confident, a powerful magus with the infinite as a halo floating above his head, the Magician mesmerizes the Fool. When asked, the Fool gives over his bundled pack and stick to the Magician. Raising his wand to heaven, pointing his finger to Earth, the Magician calls on all powers; magically, the cloth of the pack unfolds upon the table, revealing its contents. And to the Fool's eyes it is as if the Magician has created the future with a word. There are all the possibilities laid out, all the directions he can take. The cool, airy Sword of intellect and communication, the fiery Wand of spirituality and ambition, the overflowing Chalice of Love and emotions, the solid Pentacle of work, possessions and body. With these tools, the Fool can create anything, make anything of his life. But here's the question, did the Magician create the tools, or were they already in the pack? Only the Magician knows - and on this mystery, our eloquent mage refuses to say a word. Minor Mentors: Key: Know that everything is possible through the power of God. Reverse Key: Abuse of power, the ability to manipulate words and actions to suit your own selfish needs. Memory (Upright position): Through God's love let all men know All is given, blessings flow. Memory (Reverse postion): Hidden truths and cunning ways Can hurt your life in coming days. Guideline (upright position): Application of will and the courage to have faith is the fornula for success. You are well blessed and your fervent attitude will bring about what you need. You are going in the right direct. Guidlines (Reverse position): Not applying yourself in the right way; cannot achieve anything unless you change your attitude. Lack of willpower, cannot seem to cope with obstacles. Too busy finding the easy way out. Undercurrents, possible deceit, not telling the whole story. You should look deeper into the situation. 1 The Magcian Astrology Magician is represented by Mercury. He represents the gift of tongues, a smooth talker, a salesman. Also clever with the slight of hand (Mercury *was* the god of thieves!) and a medicine man - either a real doctor or someone trying to sell you snake oil. The 4 suits laid out before him remind us of the 4 aces, which in the Tarot symbolize the raw, undeveloped, undirected power of each suit. When the Magician appears, he reveals these to you. The reader might well interpet this card as telling the querent that they will be given a vision, an idea, a magical, mental image of whatever it is they most want: the solution to a problem, an ambitious career, a love life, a job. Mercury, the traditional ruler of Virgo, is linked to the magician card of the tarot. The Rider-Waite-Smith magician is a handsome young man who is manipulating objects that represent the four elements: earth, air, fire and water. The magician’s right hand is raised toward heaven and his left hand points toward the earth, reminiscent of the phrase used for centuries to justify astrology, “As above, so below.?Mercury’s magic is the power of intellect, reason, logic, analysis and attention to detail. Modern technology, which would appear magical to the ancients, is a product of Mercury’s power. Meditation: You must learn to go within yourself and use the divine power available. Life presents opportunities that are not always recognized because they are offered in the embryonic state. He who does not understand the divine wisdom see only the mighty oak and ignores the potential of the acorn. Through the wisdom of the Tarot, we battle with seeds that have remained undernourished through lack of recognition. It is easy to learn that Cups, reprewents Love and Happiness, bu the sensitive Tarot Master is able to detect the Seed of love in the thinble, the beginnings of negative vibrations in the penknife Man must know himself, he must know his desires by laying the openly on the table of life and believing that all is possible to those who have faith. Make known your request to God and reach out to the divine channel for His promised manifestations. Best time for this mediatation:
At least one hour after rising, to enable you to see clearly your true desires and goals. Know that you are an instrument of God and bring down the divine power. |

The High Priestess ACTIONS staying nonactive withdrawing from involvement allowing events to proceed without intervention being receptive to influence becoming calm being passive waiting patiently accessing the unconscious using your intuition seeking guidance from within trusting your inner voice opening to dreams and the imagination being aware of a larger reality seeing the potential understanding the possibilities opening to what could be seeing your hidden talents allowing development letting what is there flower sensing the mystery looking beyond the obvious approaching a closed off area opening to the unknown remembering something important sensing the secret and hidden seeking what is concealed acknowledging the Shadow OPPOSING CARDS: Some Possibilities Magician - acting consciously, thinking, the known and obvious Two of Wands - acting boldly Seven of Wands - being aggressive Eight of Wands - putting plans into action REINFORCING CARDS: Some Possibilities Hermit - looking inward, withdrawing, seeking guidance Hanged Man - suspending activity, waiting Four of Swords - resting quietly, contemplating DESCRIPTION The High Priestess is the guardian of the unconscious. She sits in front of the thin veil of unawareness which is all that separates us from our inner landscape. She contains within herself the secrets of these realms and offers us the silent invitation, "Be still and know that I am God." The High Priestess is the feminine principle that balances the masculine force of the Magician. The feminine archetype in the tarot is split between the High Priestess and the Empress. The High Priestess is the mysterious unknown that women often represent, especially in cultures that focus on the tangible and known. The Empress represents woman's role as the crucible of life. In readings, the High Priestess poses a challenge to you to go deeper - to look beyond the obvious, surface situation to what is hidden and obscure. She also asks you to recall the vastness of your potential and to remember the unlimited possibilities you hold within yourself. The High Priestess can represent a time of waiting and allowing. It is not always necessary to act to achieve your goals. Sometimes they can be realized through a stillness that gives desire a chance to flower within the fullness of time. |

Daily Prayer Meditation for High Priestess Exercise: 1. Say the prayer slowly and thoughtfully, with the appropriate card before you. Look at the picture and become totally involved with the symbols portrayed, for the picture is you- your Higher Self. Bless me, dear Father, and let me understand all that is happening in my life today. I ask for the Christ Light to shine on all my dark corners so that I may look upon the problems that will confront me. I pray for gentleness of Saints and to learn that no matter how much I fell right, there is always another side to consider. Teach me humility, which is true strength, and let my thoughts and actions today be constructive and helpful. Grant me the ability to help someone in need and lighten a shadow in his life as I ask Thee for the same gift. Teach me consideration and help me to shift the concern I have for myself to others more in need. Take from me the fear of losing my image in the eyes of others. In Thy sweet mercy, let those who love me know me as I really am. All this , dear Father, I ask in Thy Holy Name,. Amen. The Story of the High Priestess:
On the earth plane there are both negative and positive forces, material and spiritual values. Within the High Priestess man can learn to face all that may oppose him in realizing this eternal balance of energies. He must learn to balance his emotions and desires and to direct his thoughts to his Higher Conciousness. Continuing his journey, the Fool comes upon a beautiful and mysterious veiled lady enthroned between two pillars and illuminated by the moon. She is the opposite of the Magician, quiet where he was loquacious, still where he was in motion, sitting while he stood, shrouded in the night where he was out in the bright of day. She is the High Priestess and she astonishes the Fool by knowing everything about him. "Since you know me so well, perhaps you can help me," says the Fool, laying out his sword, chalice, staff and pentacle. "The Magician showed me these tools, but now I'm in a quandry. There's so many things I could do with them. I can't decide." In answer, the High Priestess hands over to him a pair of ancient scrolls. "These will teach you how to decide." Seating himself at her feet, the Fool reads by the light of her crescent moon. Finally, the Fool knows enough that he can now decide what he wants, where he will go, and what he will do. Though he suspects that the High Priestess has even more secrets she could teach him--like what lies behind the pomegranate curtain--he is focused and ready to be on his way. Thanking the High Priestess, he heads off. But as he leaves he hears her whisper, quiet as the waters which bubble up from beneath her throne, "We'll meet again...when you're ready to travel the most secret path of all." The High Priestess is the card of knowledge, instinctual, supernatural, secret knowledge. She holds scrolls of arcane information that she might, or might not reveal to you. The moon crown on her head as well as the crescent by her foot indicates her willingness to illuminate what you otherwise might not see, reveal the secrets you need to know in order to make a decision about a problem or a job, an investment, love, career, family, etc. And, finally, there is, behind her throne, the curtain that leads to the deepest, most esoteric and secret knowledge; the pomegranates that decorate it remind us of Persephone, who was taken down into the land of the dead, ate its fruit, and became the only goddess allowed to travel to and from that strange land. Which indicates that when you get the High Priestess, you're going to be learning some very odd things. Very odd. If there is a card that symbolizes the tarot reader is it the High Priestess. A woman (or man!) of psychic powers, intuition and secret knowledge. Where the Magician is about revealing, the High Priestess is about keeping things hidden behind the curtain. Things you know, but don't tell. If the reader feels the High Priestess stands for the Querent, then this is a time of solitary investagation and the passing on of secret knowledge. The Querent might find themselves spending time in old libraries, reading through dusty documents and letters, or studying old religious texts. Things kept secret will be revealed to them. Likewise, these secrets might come to them psychically by way of visions or powerful instincts. Insights may be found in crystal balls, tea leaves, dreams or conversations with spirits. Standing for someone other than the Querent, the High Priestess is usually read as a spiritual woman, a nun or astrologer, a teacher of archaic knowledge, or just a reclusive relative who knows a lot of family secrets. She is a repository of obscure knowledge, a walking library with uncanny instincts and insights. She may, as well, come across as cold, unpredictable, even scary. As a card, the High Priestess is about knowledge. "I've a new idea," says the querent--thanks to the Magician. Maybe they've realized they want to be an painter or run for office or open their own business. But how do they decide what they want to paint? How do they decide which public office to run for? How do they find out where to start their new business? Knowledge. Insider knowledge from some old expert being the best. The more secrets the querent knows, the easier it is to know what to do with the idea. This is the job of the High Priestess, to offer secret knowledge, like the moon on a dark night, so that the querent can find their path. She sits between the pillars of dark and light, existance and negation, wax and wane. All secret knowledge is hers. Key: Activity beneath the surface; the whole picture cannot be seen at this point. Much depth. Memory: Behind the viel, within your grasp, Living knowledge from the past. Guidelines: Ability to use intuition and receive spiritual inspiration. Best to keep your intentions or ideas to yourself. Bes sure to selct the right person for any confidence shared. Be yourself in any situation; have complete faith in your feelings at this time. Reverse Key: Superficial situation; there are no secret activities involved.
Memory: Nothing hidden, naught to fear; All is seen, don't waste a tear. Guidelines; At this point examine everything you do; do not place trust untill you have comepletely analyzed the situation. Can refer to a person with weak charactor and lacking stamina could effect relationship or any kind of support you may be needing. Suggests a complete review of person or situation; strength is lacking and a need for deeper committment. The High Priestess Astrology: Virgo During the terrible times that followed, the gods deserted earth one by one and went to live in heaven. The very last to leave was Astraea, goddess of innocence and purity. After leaving the earth, astraea was placed among the stars and became the constellation of Virgo. The legend is that one day the Goplden Age will come again, and that Astraea(Virgo) will return to earth.The unfolding mysteries of bringing spirit into matter in order to honor it, worship it, recognize it, and ultimately get to its patterns. This is the realm of the Sacred Work. While undergoing Virgo training you must learn the ways of the High Priestess or Priest, conducting ceremony and observing the rhythms and cycles of Earth and Sky. It is here that you will honor all life as sacred. Meditation;
The student who is aware of his own "self-made" obstacles can find enlightenment through meditation on this beautiful Tarot symbol. Through sincere effort and concentration, you can remove the barrier between your inner and outer being. Upon acheiving this level of tranquility, you will be aware only of One Divine Consciousness, which in turn will reveal your original soul journey and throw light upon your original goals. You will rid yourself of inhibitions and all earthy fears and become motivated by standards you thought impossible. Upon reaching the inner center of sopul activity, the mysteries once hidden deep within the subconsious will come to surface and reveal your destiny. So often we feel inadequate, not knowing which way is best, but having attained peace of mind, we can sit serene like the High Priestess, recognizing the constant flow of both negative and positive vibrations and accepting the conditions around us. Look into the power of your subconscious and bravely make the change that will heal your soul and body. Time for this meditation:
This is a beautiful meditation. Allow time afterwards to contemplate the beauty and strength of truly being at ONE with yourself. Peace is granted to the soul who goes to sleep in tune with god. |
