Cromniomancy Cromnionmancy Is divination by onions and historically was practiced in Europe, Africa and Nothern Asia. Onions, with its sphere within a shere through history have been a revered symbol of spirituality and eternity. The ancient Egyptians took their sacred oathes with their right hands on an onion. It is unknown why the onion became a form of divination. One theory is because the onion is a fast sprouting plant and another theory is that onions were a important food souce because of it is rich in vitamin C and was also used as a medicinal herb against infections. Cromniomancy is usally done by interpreting the onions sprouting behavior. One way of doing this is to inscribe the names of beloved one on the onion and then they are left alone until they begin to sprout. The faster the sprouting, the healthier and happier their loved ones would be. Another method involves inscribing names, wishes, events or answers to questions on the onion. The onion is then buried in the ground. The onion thats sprouts first gives the required answer to the question asked. Another method for a women trying to find her future mate involves carving the names of possible suiters into separate onions, burying them in the ground and the one that sprouts first will be her future husband. A similar method involves the woman carrying inscribed onions with names carved in them and burying them in the ground near a fire on December 1st and the one that sprouts first will be her future mate. Answers requiring a yes or no answer could be found by inscribing the word yes and no on 2 separate onions, planting them and the one that sprouts first is the answer to the question. In southern Germany onions were used to predict the weather for the following year. At Sylvester evening you take 12 sphere-like pieces of onion and put them on a wooden board in a row. Each onion represtns the months of the year from January to December. A grain of salt is put into every piece of onion and the whole thing is left overnight in a room without heating but without frost. The amount of liquid in every onion piece predicts how much rain/snow there will be in each represented month. Today cromniomancy is still practiced in some rural areas where it has had a long tradition, mostly by teenagers who are desperate to find their future mates. The general occult community however does not consider this a form of divination or spiritual enlightenment |
