Sheelah's Day (Ireland) Sheelah-Na-Gig Themes: Fertility; Sexuality; Protection; Passion; Femininity Symbols: Nakedness; Lust-inspiring Scents; Whiskey About Sheelah-Na-Gig: The image of this Irish goddess of ferility tell us much about the unbridled nature of feminine passion that Sheelah inspires with springlike whimsy. She is shown smiling broadly, holding her legs wide open, completely naked. Nonetheless, this is not irresponsible lust; it is the gate of life through which we all pass. Interestingly enough, Sheelah's image, in an amulet, offers protection, too-perhaps she was the first goddess of safe sex? To Do Today: Sheelah's Day is celebrated in true Irish fashion by drinking abundant whiskey and drowning a shamrock in the last glass comsumed, to end the festivities. This particular custom denotes the idea of consuming one's luck, increasing fecundity, and internalizing the goddess's protective energies before the day is over. So if you can tolerate whisky, toast Sheelah, take a sip, and warm up your passion! Otherwise, offer her a libation of whiskey, asking for her energy to be likewise liberated in your body. If you have a significant other, one of the best ways to honor Sheelah is through passionate encounters that are balanced with wisdom and foresight. Take a condom and bless it, saying, Sheelah, my hunger see, let my body love freely. But keep us safe, fertility bind, no matter our haste, keep protection in mind. Carry this condom with you to your tryst. |

Marzenna (Poland) Themes: Spring; Weather; Protection; Winter; Death; Rebirth; Cycles; Change; Growth Symbols: Doll (poppet); Water (including ice and snow) About Marzenna: The Polish goddess for whom this holiday is named represents an odd combination of winter, death, and the fruit field's growth and fertility. As such, she oversees the earth's transition from death to rebirth and likewise oversees the transitions we wish to make in our lives. To Do Today: Marzenna is a Polish spring festival during which an effigy of Marzenna is tossed into a river to overcome her wintery nature and ensure that there will be no floods that year. Let Marzenna carry it away, slowly breaking down that negative energy and replacing it with personal growth. Burying an image has the same effect. To envoke Marzenna's protection until next winter, write your name and birthdate on a piece of paper and freeze it in an ice cube. Keep the cube in a safe place in the back of your freezer to keep yourself surrounded by Marzenna's safe barrier. Slavic Plowing Season Leshachikha Themes: Earth; Nature; Harvest; Birth; Protection Symbols: Soil; a Leaf; Seeds About Leshachikha: A goddess who sometimes appears as a Slavic forest, a wild animal, or a leaf, Leshachikha is said to have died in October and revived around this time in spring. She fiercely protects her lands, not taking kindly to any who abuse them. In this manner she teaches us about reciprocity and nature's fury. Additional, Leshachikha's watchful aspects can be applied to our figurative lands--for example, safe guarding our homes. To Do Today: Whenever you need a little extra protective energy, pick up a fallen leaf and put it in your pocket. This will keep Leshachikha's guardian powers with you all day. To bring that protection into your home, wax the leaf to perserve it, symbolically sustaining the magickal energy forever. Put the waxed leaf near your entryway or in the room where you spend the most time. Go to a nearby field or park today and scatter some seed to Leshachikha to greet her as she awakens. Today marks the beginning of the plowing season in Slavic regions. Before this date the earth is regarded as pregnant. It is a crime against nature and Leshachikha to plow the soil with iron tools when it still bears a magickal child (spring). Once earth has given birth, the fields can then accept new seed, which the birds will also appreciate! |

Today she breathes on us with a late-March zephyr bearing health and well-being. Breathe deeply of the air, which has rejuvenating, healthy energies today. As you exhale, repeat the goddess's name, Nut, and listen as she responds in the breeze. Bali Temple Offering Vac Themes: Purification; Protection; Offerings; Communication Symbols: The Spoken Word; Fresh Flowers About Vac: The Balinese/Hindu goddess of charms and incantations, Vac joins in today's celebrations usuing her powers to banish any lingering shadows or negativity from our lives. Traditionally, Vac is present in any scared words that convey occult power or knowledge. This is especially true of mantras that reaffirm, sustain, and shelter one's soul. Artistic renderings reveal Vac as a mature, graceful woman bedecked in gold (an allusion to solar energy). She sometimes also appears as a cow, which is her mother-goddess aspect. To Do Today: Bali legends say that hellish beings roam freely during this time of year, so everyone cleanses themselves and the land through magick and supplications. In this spirit, periodic spiritual "house cleaning" is a good habit to get into, especially if you live in the city. Leave an offering of flowers on your altar, saying Vac's name as you put them out. This begins the process of purging any clinging bad vibes and restoring your home's sanctity. Use noise makers to chase out any malintended magick or spirits. Masquerade (Africa) Mujaji Themes: Balance; Restoration; Weather; Cleansing; Fertility Symbol: Rainwater About Mujaji: Mujaji is an African rain goddess who exudes gently with fertility, or fiercely with cleansnig, depending on the need. Her power and presence is so impressive that it led H. Rider Haggard to write the novel She, based on her cult. To Do Today: To purify any area and ready it for ritual, sprinkle rainwater as you move clockwise, saying, Mujaji, flow through me; Mujaji, cleanse me; Mujaji, rain lightly here on all I love and hold dear. To expel unproductive emotions (represented by the sky's tears), do the same thing, but move counterclockwise--this is the traditional direction of banishing. If it does rain gently today, it is a sign of blessing. Go out and skip dance, or sing in the rain (think Gene Kelly and a magickal twist). This will renew your spirit and lift any dark clouds overshadowing your heart. Africans observe this holiday as a time to reinstate symmetry in the world and in themselves. They wear elaborate costumes to appease the divine, praying for the necessary rainfall to ensure rich soil, and consequently an abundant harvest. To adapt this, pray to Mujaji to enrich the soil of your soul so that come the fall, you can harvest her productive nature. |
