Story ritual for Imbolc

Characters :
The Dreamer -(Ethlinn,Brighid as winter guardian)
The Awakener -(The White cow, Brighid as nourisher)
The Initiator -(Birog, Brighid as releaser)
The Hero - (Cian,Lugh)  There may be only one hero or there can be several who undertake the experience together.

Simple costumes and even half masks would enhance this ritual.

The Dreamer :Black robe / tabard. Carries white fabric cloak.
The Awakener :White robe / tabard.Carries chalice containing milk.
The Releaser :Red robe or tabard. Carries Rowan wand.

Other props.
Dreamer- budding twig(s)
Awakener-small cake(s)
Releaser-candle(s)/lantern(s)
TT>A cauldron containing water and a lit candle.

The hero, from now on referred to in the singular for ease of writing, requires no special costume but should dress as he feels appropriate.

*~Opening positions.~*

The hero lies passive in the north just out side the circle.

The three aspects of the Goddess stand in the center of the circle at D,A,R.

The dreamer walks towards the northern rim of the circle as she speaks.

Dreamer : I am the dreamer, the holder, the weaver, I wait in mysilence, embracing the dark. I do not yet call, for you sleep in my dreaming. I do not yetcall, for you dream in my sleep. You dream still of fire frost, Of leaf withered winter, Of peace and forgetting, But I in my solitude, wait for the swelling Of bud form and leaf form and swordbright beginnings

The dreamer has been circling, sunwise, the sleeping hero and now lays
her cloak over him
.

Dreamer : Sleep under my mantle and dream of your stories Of waking, and questing, and sleeping again.

Returns to center and embraces the awakener. Awakener then picks up
chalice and moves towards the north as she speaks.

Awakener :I am the 'wakener, follow my footsteps
Where green shafts rise sharp in the keenness of dawn.
I touch you with longing, with seedbreath of Spring time
I touch you with longing, now wonder and wake.

Removes cloak from hero, raises him to feet. As she speaks she then offers the chalice to the hero who drinks from it.

I greet you in beauty  Rise, welcome your hunger  The wild thirst of wanting. Drink from my chalice, drink deep and be nourished. The white milk of fostering take to your own. Drink now, be nourished, for yours is the journey Of searching and finding and loosing again

The Awakener draws the hero just inside the circle at the north, where he stands alert and very awake.
The Awakener returns to the center puts down chalice and embraces the Releaser. The Releaser then moves to the north as she speaks.

The Releaser :I am the rleaser, the tester, the shifter, I await you with sunburst, with shadow with mist I will meet you with shaping and change you with
knowing, When we stand at the crossroads where all paths divide.

Touches hero with Rowan wand.

Grow strong in your striving, Grow well in your wishing, Grow lithe in your learning .  I call for you friendship and sharing companions. As you move to your training and taking of arms. For your path is not known to me, lies in your choosing. You must seek for the thread of our winding again.

The releaser returns to center.
Hero raises his arms and faces centere
Hero  : By the earth of the dark cairn And the deep cauldron pool. By the sword of the flamefire, And the bright air of Spring I call you, I honor you Maker and waker, Mother and guide. I hold to your path 'till you call me again.

The dreamer joins the hero and kisses him.

Dreamer  : When you see me again You will not then know me. When you know me again, You will not then see me. But I will remember you, travel in joy

Hands hero a budding twig.
Awakener joins hero and kisses him.

Awakener: There are chalices other Than that I have offered you, Of sorrow and gladness You will drink in your turn. but never for you Will the chalice be empty And I will remember you, travel in joy.

She offers the hero an apple.

The Releaser joins hero and kisses him.
Releaser : I release you to freedom, To travel your path. For a while I will guide you At the start of your way. When we meet as adversaries And I will remember you, travel in joy.

She offers the hero a candle or lantern and leads him to the north west, to the Imbolc station of the circle. Here the candle is lit, (if several heroes, then one for each).

The Imbolc station can be decorated ready with suitable symbols if wanted.
The initiator/releaser then returns to the center. The three hold
hands.

All together . The year wheel has turned We give thanks to the Goddess For the paths She has dreamed in us, The power She has raised in us,

The strength now released in us. Give thanks to the Goddess Who has forged in Her cauldron The sword of the Spring.

*~FINISH~*

Although this style of ritual takes the form of Psychodrama it can be very effective whether read or learned. At the end it is wise for all to circle the working circle area being aware of a return to everyday consciousness. The sharing of food and drink afterwards as usual is an aid in the grounding.
