How to Use Essential Oils Safely

Essential oils are very concentrated and potent. Even small amounts can cause harm if used improperly. Here are my tips on how to use essential oils safely.

Do not apply undiluted essential oils to your skin. It can cause a burn. Essential oils are absorbed through the skin, so it can also result in an overdose.

Make sure you store essential oils out of the reach of children.

Do not get essential oils in your eyes, nose, or ears. Wash your hands thoroughly after using essential oils. If working with pure essential oils, you may want to get disposable latex gloves from the drug store.

Do not take essential oils internally. Even small amounts can be toxic and potentially fatal if ingested.

Before going out in the sun or to a tanning booth, avoid essential oils that increase your sensitivity to the sun, such as citrus oils (e.g. bergamot oil, grapefruit oil).

Do a patch test if you have allergies or think you might be sensitive to an essential oil. Test aromatherapy products (such as lotions or creams) by applying a small dab to your arm. For pure essential oils, add one drop in 2.5 mL (or 1/2 teaspoon) of vegetable oil and apply it to your arm. If the area turns red, or if there is burning or itchiness, wash the area and do not use that product.

Overuse of essential oils can trigger a headache or dizziness. Don't exceed recommended amounts. If you're working with essential oils (e.g. making your own lotions, candles, or bath salts) make sure you're working in a well ventilated area or take breaks to go outside.

People with liver or kidney disease should only use essential oils under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Once absorbed in the bloodstream, essential oils are eventually cleared from your body by the liver and kidneys--using essential oils excessively can damage these organs.

Sleeping pills or sedatives may interact with relaxing essential oils such as chamomile, lavender, and melissa (lemon balm). Consult a qualified practitioner if you are using these medications.

Diluting True Essential Oils

As a general guideline, add 5 to 7 drops to 1/8 cup of base oil, such as jojoba.  This dilutes the essential oil so that it won't irritate the skin, but you will still be able to smell it.
Some true essential oils are such severe skin irritants that I've rarely included them in any of the recipes, and have noted this property.

Using Oils

Oils are used in innumberable ways in magic.  Remember:  Always use oils with visualization and with power.
Most often, they're rubbed onto cnadles which are then burned in ritual.  The magical goal determines the type of oil and the color of the candle used.  The oil's powers mix with that of the color and the candle flame.  All these energies are further boosted by the magician's personal power and are sped toward the magical goal through visualization.
Oils are also simply used to anoint the body to bring their energies within.  Thus, rubbing a Love Oil onto the wrists, the neck, and over the heart infuses the magician with love-attracting energies.  Courage Oil similarly imbues her or him with the strength to forge ahead in the face of adversity.
A simple bath can be transformed into a ritual by adding several drops of oil to the water.  Slipping into it and inhaling the fragrance, the magician once again brings the oil's energies inside.
Talismans and amulets (often termed "charms" or "sachets") may be anointed with a few drops of the appropriate mixed oil.  This is done, of course, with the specific magical goal in mind.
Quartz crystals and other stones are also rubbed with oils to boost their energies during spells and rituals.  The stones are ten worn, carried or placed in mystic patterns to bring about specific magical goals.
Other ritual uses of oils will become apparent once you start using them.
