Empathy is an important emotional intelligence competency. Empathy Instruction and coaching have been shown to lead to increases in Personal openness, mindfulness of others' needs in conflict Situations, improved teamwork, and greater job satisfaction.
The higher people's scores on measures of empathy and pro social Behavior, the higher their scores on measures of critical and Higher-order thinking.
1. Assume the role of a real or fictional person and imagine or act Out that person's feelings and/or behavior.
2. Learn cognitively what empathy is and how it develops; take a Course or read about it.
3. Focus first on your own feelings and what kind of feelings are Associated with what situations.
4. Then focus on similarities between you and other people.
5. Sustained practice at taking the perspective of other people.
6. Exposure to emotionally arousing stimuli (art, poetry) such as Portrayals of misfortune, deprivation, or distress on the part of Others tends to increase empathetic feelings and responses.
7. Observe and be around empathetic people who can be models.
8. Study empathetic people such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Or Mother Theresa.
