Kitchen Witchery
Finding the sacred in everyday tasks
Source: pagan-wiccan-practice.suite101.com

Some who hear the term “Kitchen Witch?may think that this is a magickal art confined only to the kitchen or cooking, but in actuality being a Kitchen Witch encompasses so much more. Very simply put, it is about finding the sacred in everyday tasks, no matter how mundane they may appear to be. It is also about working with the energies of nature to make the home a secure and sacred place.

There are other names for Kitchen Witch such as Hedge Witch, Cottage Witch and Garden Witch, but they all hold to the same philosophy of working with natural energy, recognizing the Goddess in daily actions and linking closely to the cycles of nature. As a Kitchen Witch, being mindful of the sacred in everyday life is a way to recognize that we are all part of the cycles and changes of life and that no task, no matter how small, is insignificant.

So how does one embrace the path of Kitchen Witchery? You don’t have to be an expert at cooking or have a vast knowledge of herbs, although many Kitchen Witches have these talents. You don’t need an elaborate garden in your backyard and you don’t even need to live in a house to be a Kitchen Witch. Whether you live in an apartment, a condo or a house in the suburbs the important aspects of Kitchen Witchery are intuition and mindfulness. By being aware of the Goddess in your environment and drawing on your own inner wisdom you can create a sacred sanctuary no matter where you live or what your gifts may be.

Here are some simple ways in which you can develop your mindfulness and intuition:
Take time each morning to reflect on the blessings of the new day before you. Even if it’s only for a few minutes this reflection is a way to draw positive energy around you and send out gratitude.

When you go about your daily household tasks such as cleaning, cooking, balancing your checkbook, weeding the garden, etc., be aware of the ways that these everyday tasks connect you to life and recognize the sacred in these actions.

Create a ritual that brings you closer to nature and the environment in some way. It can be through meditation, spending some time each day outside in the backyard or in a park (weather permitting of course), tending to houseplants, or reflecting on the miracle of life and re-birth that is all around us.

Observe. It may sound overly simple but observing develops mindfulness and thus enhances your intuition. Take some time each day to observe details around you such the texture of tree bark, the sounds going on outside your window, the feel of fabric or the patterns of sunlight and shadows. Observing not only nurtures your intuition but it also brings you closer to life and nature.

Keep a daily journal and write in it your observations of the day, the tasks you performed, the connections that you felt through these tasks and all the little ways that you honored the Goddess during the day. Writing a journal is a good way to gain personal insight and to nurture your awareness and intuition.
Practicing these simple daily steps and creating your own unique routine will help you to develop your gifts and intuition, and start you on your path of Kitchen Witchery.
