Riding the Unicorn

The unicorn is a mythic creature only in physical terms. It is real on the inner planes. With the unicorn by your side in the following meditation, you can journey easily into the realms of faery.

Begin your meditation with the usual preparations, the white light, relaxing, and dumping your problems.

You are standing on a hill with darkness all around you. The stars are bright in the night sky. You hear the call of owls, the howl of a wolf. Suddenly, the sky is filled with the blazing colored lights of the aurora borealis, the northern lights. Out of these fantastic lights comes a white form, its delicate hooves treading the night skies. It is a unicorn, the horned horse of the ancients.

The unicorn lands gently beside you and pushes its soft, warm nose against your outstretched hand. His shining horn sparkles in the darkness. In his thoughts, he invites you to go with him into the world of faery.

You mount the horned horse, clutching his long silky mane. Like a feather caught in the wind, the unicorn launches himself into the sky. He soars straight into the flickering northern lights, and comes out in a bright world of wonder and enchantment.

His shining hooves make no sound as he lands in the flower studded grass of a little clearing. Tall trees line two sides of this meadow, while a quiet lake lies on the third side. Directly before you is a castle, its towers hung with banners, its gates open.

Near the castle are tables and benches where a crowd of people are feasting. They call to the unicorn who carries you to them. When you reach the feast, you realize that the people are different. Some of the men and women have pointed ears and slanted eyebrows, the sign of elves. There are little gnomes and dwarves dressed in Earth colors. Fearies with their delicate transparent wings folded at their backs are drinking from flower goblets. Shy brownies nibble at little cakes, while fauns and centaurs smile slyly at you.

A tall man and woman, dressed in forest greens, sit on throne-like chairs near the center of the festivities. The man rises and holds out his hand to you.

“Join us,?he says. “We are the Lord and Lady of the Greenwood, and these are our friends. Join us, and be welcome.?/FONT>

“Come, Earth-child,?says the woman. “We would have you know us all better. Join the forest feast.?/FONT>

You slide down and walk to a place at one of the tables. An elf brings sweet grass to the unicorn, and several faery children begin to plait flowers in his mane.

A golden plate is placed before you, piled with strange foods. A silver flower goblet is poured full of sparkling yellow wine. You sit beside these wondrous beings and join them in their feast.

Musicians walk about the tables playing a harp, a flute of willow, and a reed pipe. You taste the strange food and find it to your liking. The wine is cool and pleasant. The faeries, elves, and others are willing to answer all of your questions.

When the feasting is over, many people follow the Lord and Lady into the meadow to dance. There are slow dances, fast dances, spinning and walking dances. You can join them if you care to.

The unicorn nudges you with its nose. It is time to return to your own plane of existence. Reluctantly, you mount the beautiful animal and say goodbye to the faery folk. The unicorn leaps back up to the northern lights. As you pass through the dancing colors, you hear the strains of Otherworld music far below.

The unicorn lands gently once more on the night-darkened hill. As you slide from his back, you feel yourself sliding back into your physical body.
