LAKOTA TEACHINGS
In our study of the planets and their associated supernatural spirit we now
Come to URANUS and its supernatural polarised energy called TATE (Wind).
TATE the supernatural should not be confused with TATE (one of the Sixteen
Great Mysteries) although TATE of the sixteen great mysteries set apart from
Himself TATE the supernatural.

TATE (the supernatural)
Keyword--SELF EXPRESSION
TRADITION and TEACHING
TATE of the sixteen great mysteries was created from Skan, the spirit of
Motion. They are both superior spirits, Tate, the superior spirit, began to
Blow across the Earth carrying the seed of the Life Force, blowing into the
Waiting human tribe. The force of Tate is carried within the seed and passed
Down through generations.
Tate, the supernatural, who was set apart from TATE, the superior spirit is a
Negative wind that blows the seed of discord. The positive side of Tate will
Be known in full measure in the form of a prophet who will teach us to heal
With sound.
Message of Tate
I have one name, but I am many. I am the winds that come from all sides,
From between the Four Directions. I scatter your energies and thoughts as I
Scatter the seeds of confusion and doubts. I bring you to your centre only
After you have spun like a top trying to catch me. Me, I am many! You reach
Out to grab me and your hand stays empty. I am quick, much quicker than you.
I teach you about whom you are-- the talking, singing animal. Do not be
Afraid to use your voice. Maybe it is time to vocalise your questions or
Feelings. The original peoples know the beauty of sound. You hear it in
Their chants, their drums, their musical instruments.
Guidance and Reflection
Sound is a great healer. Use sound as a means to express your emotions,
Either verbally, through yelling, chanting, or singing a particular sound.
Or maybe you can play a drum, shake a rattle or use another musical
Instrument. Let the vibrations of the sound you make shake up the tension
And anxiety you've been holding inside. Allow the wind to carry the sound
Waves into the Earth Mother where they can be absorbed.
The intention is not always to keep quiet but "to let it rip" and hear the
Sound of that release. The release gives you the opportunity to experience
The liberating supernatural breath in many ways.
If you are angry, express your feelings to the listening Spirit before
Confronting the individual or situation. Doing so allows you to express
Yourself with clarity. See that your anxiety and anger do not destroy your
Power to handle and resolve the situation effectively.

AFFIRMATION
I will remember in times of discord and confusion, I can seek the steady
Centre within, for stability, guidance and grace.

Lakota teachings (Tob Tob)
We now come to Pluto in our study of the planets in Lakota tradition. The
Associated supernatural spirit (polarized energy) is TOB TOB (Eight
Directions of the Wind).
You may recognize the name Tob Tob as one of the sixteen Great Mysteries. In
Being one of the sixteen Great Mysteries my key word to you is Wisdom and I
Come to you as the Bear. Tob means four and Tob Tob means four times four.
In this expanded progression I come to you as the wisdom of the four legged,
Extending to the extremes of the Four Directions communicated by the Four
Winds.
But I split my personality so I was all positive and Tob Tob the
Supernatural became the force of the negative. The four points between. The
Four negative directions of the wind carry personal challenges to those in
Its path. They are the Northeast, the Southeast, the Southwest and the
Northwest. The People in the North of Turtle Island call these winds the
Chinook. In the South they call these winds the Santa Anas. I, Tob Tob the
Supernatural flies with the wind from the sea, across the desert, the
Mountains, the plains, and I am the unseen force that comes with these winds
Affecting the motion of life.
The key word I have for as a supernatural spirit is SELF- PROTECTION.

TOB TOB
Message from the Eight Directions of the Wind
I am here from long ago when human beings chose to pursue a path separate
From that of their brothers and sisters--the four legged, and the relatives
That swim and fly. No longer would you humans live the life of instinctual
Knowing. That which you wished to know had expanded beyond that place. For
You became the talking animal and lost your voice. No longer would you talk
With your relatives and be protected.
But your relatives do not forget you. They can come to you as your allies,
Totems, and friends to offer you protection. Honor them, respect them and
Share with them, and they will offer you their talents and gifts. I, Tob Tob
The supernatural bring them to you on the eight directions of the Wind.
As they are protectors, especially the land animals, they come close to you
When you are asked to look at your safety and protection. Connect with your
Totems and they will help you take steps to protect yourself from internal
And external interference while keeping your self-esteem intact. They help
You reinforce your strengths and abilities, and deflect anything that
Diminishes your sense of your higher purpose
Guidance and Reflection.
As you open up and express your Higher Self, you open yourself to
Accelerated lessons and growth experiences. You will probably find yourself
Facing some difficult teachings and teachers among the people you come in
Contact with. You may find yourself confronting issues that you would prefer
To keep quietly buried. We often encounter emotional manipulation when we
Resist letting go, and moving forward, or when we have missed opportunities
To face a particular lesson.
Free yourself from the attitude that internalizes every situation and
Interaction. Remember that those people who you interact with have their own
Challenges and driving forces. You are not always at the center of their
Decisions. Be kind to yourself and be understanding of others. If it is time
To remove yourself from a situation or relationship, do so. Ask for internal
Guidance and the help of your allies. If there is no need to remain in an
Uncomfortable, unsupported, situation, relationship, or job, maybe its time
To get out and move to the next step.
Call on TOB TOB and your allies and totems for wisdom during these times of
Change. For within change you find the opportunity to be more fully yourself

Affirmation.
I acknowledge the wisdom of all my relations as I seek and find wisdom
During times of change. In doing so I realize I am being more fully myself

Good health is a great gift. If any of us were given the chance of
Having three wishes fulfilled, good health would be high on the list
For many of us. However, as we know all too well, from time to time
Our sense of being healthy and enjoying life to the full seems to
Have "gone walkabout". For some of us there may be chronic, ongoing
Illness to cope with, for others it may be a case of recovering from
The lingering effects of a virus or infection, or even an accident of
Some sort, and some may spend years fighting a sense of lacking even
The energy to face the demands of waking up in the morning.

Years ago, there seemed to be quite a few people who took pride in
Saying that they had "never once been to the Doctor's" in the whole
Of their life. Nowadays, such people seem to be in short supply and
All of us spend a considerable amount of thought and effort in trying
To eat the right foods and do the right things to stay healthy.
Health is appropriately a major concern in all areas of the world,
And a major industry in civilized society.

At such a time as this, when the Health Service has vast demands made
Upon it, it is perhaps no surprise to find people in their thousands
Looking for guidance and help from alternative therapies both old and
New, in addition to the medical expertise of allopathic medicine
Available from their local G.Ps and hospital services. Many of the
Alternative practices are themselves thousands of years old, tried
And tested and not found wanting. They come from all over the planet,
Both East and West, and many work not only for human beings, but for
The animal and vegetable kingdoms also. Life is One. We all need
Harmony and acceptance to reach our full potential, and such things
Are very much part of a healthy body and a healthy mind.

Practitioners of many kinds abound in our society, therapists working
With skills of many kinds from various forms of touch to alternative
Remedies such as homeopathy, counselling, colour, crystals and
Visualisation work. In every case, the energies of the patient are
Being adjusted to bring balance and harmony where, for one reason or
Another, they have been out of alignment.

Energies can be adjusted.... Even where those energies are
Functioning
As dense physical matter such as bones and tissue.

Shamanistic healing works on all these levels.....body, mind and
Soul. It also has a particular part to play in "soul retrieval" work.
That is to say that, when we experience trauma of various kinds, some
Of our soul energy becomes trapped and lost to us; we move on in our
Lives feeling as if part of us has died and we have less energy than
Before. When we successfully learn to "call our soul back home", we
Are capable of living dramatically differently with a joy and a
Passion that cannot but be noticed and which can inspire others to
Live colourfully and in tune with life's full potential.

The Shaman works at this level. He practises moving onto different
Energy frequencies and aligns his energy with that of different life-
Forms. Paul (Big Bear), for instance, has done a considerable amount
Of healing work with animals. He is a Registered Healer as well as a
Shamanic Practitioner and, at one time, local children would
Frequently arrive at his bungalow, rushing in to bring injured and
Dying birds for his attention, knowing that many who looked as if
They had already left this world, might be enabled to fly away again
The next morning, having spent time in his care.

The healer offers us access to energy with which to heal ourselves.
He also offers us the benefits of his skill to enable us to see what
We need and why we need it. Whatever we have done with our depleted
Energies, he enables us to understand what we have lost, where to
Find it and how to absorb it once again ..... And in the process to
Truly become what we were originally designed to be ..... Whole ....
Beings of light, love and beauty. That truly is healing, and it
Benefits not only us individually but the great and wonderful Cosmos
Of which we all are part.

With the help of shamanistic healing, we can help all the kingdoms of
Earth to live together in tune with the loving heartbeat of our
Father-Mother- God. Life has demanded much from Paul (Big Bear), but
It has taught him to understand himself and others very different
From him, as well as enabling him to commune both with Nature and
With Spirit. It has been the way of the Shaman for centuries and we
Need its wisdom now as much as ever.

Shaman Symbols & Meaning

SHAMANISM AND SYMBOLS

Understanding the shamanic world requires a particular open mind, the will to learn about our own world and its secrets in order to be able to understand the Other Reality. Beyond cultural parameters, shamanism is a supernatural world, a place where the principles of Nature are materialized. A place where the shaman can communicate with these principles.

The shaman uses symbols to translate and understand these encounters, to maintain tradition, to call the spirits and receive the needed help from the extraordinary reality. To reach this state of understanding, the shaman changes into an animal, a plant, a mineral. By doing so the shaman incarnates the holy principles, and increases his power by impersonating these symbolic values. The shaman becomes a symbol himself.

Dances, gestures, and sounds are symbolic powers used to call Helpers, to enter the World of The Other Side. Spirits are symbolized, to be understood they get the appearance of an animal, a person.

Masks, ceremonial clothes, sacred objects have the task to translate the symbolic value of holy principles. They incarnate the spirits of Nature, they amplify their power. They point out the intrinsic particularities of each animal, plant, mineral or spirit The shamanic world is a world of symbols. The power of the shaman lies in its ability to understand them.

The "Bird on a Pole (or Staff)" - The image has been found in petroglyphs in Siberia. It is believed to be 13,000 years old. It is also found on the Lower Pecos. It is the oldest known symbol for the human soul. I have transformed the bird into a raven because of it's spiritual significance with more recent American Indian Peoples. I have portrayed the raven as effected by various human conditions, thus it is bound, in flight, or at rest.

The "Golden Ring of Forever"TM - Represents infinity, non-endingness, completeness, regeneration, and the cyclic nature of the universe.

The "Magic Stick" - An accoutrement of the shamanistic arts.

The "Atlatl" - A spear thrower. A ridged sling. Used with the spear, the dart, and the flint projectile point.

The "Cape" - A symbol of authority. A symbol of the utilitarian use of the sacred whitetail deer.

"Shields" - Ritualistic, ceremonial, magical, defensive, display devices.

Universal Interpretations of Symbols

Antler: Symbol of personal defense.
Arrow: The flight of the arrow, its direction to a target and from which it comes will tell of it’s focus and perspective. A straight arrow has focus. Crooked arrows represent deception or difficulty. Broken they are the symbol of an ending. Crossed is union. Grouped they are many things joined. Fire-tipped symbolizes the passion of the issue. One that pierces is the dedication to "hit the target" or goal. Arrowhead is a symbol of the beginning of a plan of action.
Bells: They clear the air signaling the consciousness of change. Bells are used in ceremony to maintain rhythm or shift focus.
Birds: Generally represent shamanic flight, rebirth or healing. Each bird having its own message. For more information a course is available covering animals as totems, guides, and teachers.
Black: Symbol of mystery, negative energy, chaos, creation, or death depending on how it is used.
Blue: Represents the separation of the dimensions and the worlds traversed by the shaman; spirituality or one’s pathwalk.
Bones: Represent the shaman as a "hollow bone" or channel for Spirit. They are symbols of death and rebirth. Some use bones of different animals for purposes of scrying (usually chicken bones).
Cave/Cavern: Symbol Mother Earth’s womb. Internal knowledge. Sacred space. A cavern is an extension of these realities.
Circle: See Medicine Wheel.
Claws/Talons: Represent the power and nature of the creature. Again an animal interpretation needs to be addressed and falls under the course on totems, guides, and teachers.
Corn Meal: Used to define sacred space by Native Americans. It warns others not to enter and will seal a door from an intrusive knock by a line drawn with it signifying a spiritual session taking place on the other side. Holds negative energy or entities at bay.
Cross: Center of balance between the four quadrants of the elemental forces: Air, Fire, Water, Earth. Represents the four roads of the shaman leading to the center and Spirit.
Dots: Symbols of veils between the dimensions. May represent the element or entities of Air. May represent the presence of spiritual entities that reside at a location or can be approached from it.
Drum: The rhythm of the drum is the heartbeat of Mother Earth. It is between the beats that Spirit resides. It is the symbolic shamanic steed that carries the Medicine Man or Woman into their shamanic journey to explore other dimensions.
Eye: Represents the trance state, the spiritual eye often called the Third Eye, or spirits watching over a locale.
Feathers: Sacred symbols of the essence of the creature from which they come and the attributes are applied to the use of the feather respectively.
Flying Buck: Symbol of shamanic flight.
Ghost: In shamanic terms it is a spirit helper or representation of spiritual protection. It may address a guide or teacher as well as a spiritual healer from another dimension. The face of a ghost may address the relationship of rebirth in some form depending upon its use.
Gold: Reflects the good, purity, positive aspects of the way it is used. Symbolic of the Sun.
Green: Represents growth and good health or healing.
Grey: Symbol of the Void of Spirit. The physical and spiritual center where positive and negative energies are balanced or held at bay.
Grids: Represent veils between the dimensions. If found at a sacred site they are a sign of that place being a portal to another realm. Other symbols present would speak of what that realm holds.
Hand: Service to others.
Medicine Wheel: Symbol of the universe in all its dimensions. The outer circle is the presence of Spirit that surrounds everything. The quarters are the four elements of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. The lines between them define the roads of the quarters. Each of the 36 stones represent an aspect of the powers, seasons, moons, clans, and teachings they possess. It is the symbol of infinity that penetrates all dimensions.
Mirrors: Reflect the presence of those who may be outside a ceremony and still a part of it. They reflect the inner self, a scrying tool, or the shedding of Spirit’s light into the darkness.
Orange: Symbol of courage, facing challenges, the energy of the mind.
Purple: Represents the enlightenment and attainment of wisdom received from Spirit.
Rainbow: Represents promise, the coming together of All Our Relations and races to share wisdom and knowledge in harmony.
Red: Symbol of passion, anger, or danger dependent upon how it is used. Symbol of blood and if it is red earth it is seen as sacred to Mother Earth. Can also represent sacrifice.
Ropes/Threads/Strings/Ladders: Represent the pathways upon which the shaman travels to Otherworlds. They are attached to a pole or tree representing the shamanic tree or true center of all worlds and then to the shaman. This allows the shaman’s spirit to travel back and forth.
Sacred Pipe: Symbol of Mother Earth, Father Sky, the seven sacred directions, and its adornments speak of the powers it holds. Sacred Pipes represent proper prayer, truth and harmony achieved through entering oneness with Spirit. Its shape and style will signify its use.
Shield: The shield has many symbolic uses. They can depict the powers or gifts of an individual; the activity within a sacred place; expressing the Medicine of an individual. There are many uses for a shield but it will always tell a tale.
Silver: Represents the spiritual aspects of a given situation or use.
Skull: Symbol of life, the eyes and ears of the spiritual essence from which it is derived. Painted they speak of energies they contain as well as the intention for their use.
Smoke: Symbol of making the unseen seen. Carries the prayers spoken into it to Spirit as it rises. It comes from the elemental Fire and thus maintains its qualities of purification. It also contains the attributes of the wood used to create the fire that produces it.
Spiral: Can represent the cycles and flow of energy or nature. May symbolize interrelationships or two paths that parallel one and other through opposites.
Staff: Symbol of the power held by the one who fashioned it or carries it. These are usually marked significantly.
Stones: With all the crystals and stones there are too many meanings to list here. These range from healing, warding, sending, and receptive qualities depending upon the stone itself.
Tree: Represents the shamanic tree, the path of the three worlds: Above, Below, and Middle through the branches, roots, and trunk.
Tunnel: Symbol of transformation or self-discovery. A new route of discovery, a passage to Otherworlds.
Vine: Represents a situation that continues to grow and may reach a great distance before it is complete.
Web: The symbolic Web of Life linking all to Spirit. The webs we weave as we create the lives we lead.
White: Symbol of purity, Spirit, that which is good.
Yellow: Symbol of courage, strength, peace, contentment, or challenge depending on how it is used.

Symbols and Charms

One magical practice was to etch various symbols into wood, bone, or stone which served as amulets and charms (they were also used to decorate the shaman's ritual drum).

This site incorporates several of the symbols that were used, and below you will find a brief meaning for each.

Preventive: This charm was believed to prevent someone from putting an evil spell on you.

Protection: This charm was believed to ward off negative energy and protect from enemies.

Love: Wearing this charm would guarantee that you would find love.

Healing: This amulet was used as a healing tool. It was given to the ill person by the shaman who would have also given his patient herbal medicine(s) and recited spells.

Wishing: This amulet was placed under the users pillow to make dreams come true.

The Unseen: This amulet was used to protect the wearer from ghosts and evil spirts. Since the Finnish magic religion believed that everything -- animate or inanimate -- possessed a soul, this charm could come in very handy.

Hannunvaakuna: Another protective charm. It has been adopted as a national symbol, and can often be seen on road signs and architecture.

The essential perspective of the shaman is:

1. Everything is alive. Everything has spirit and awareness.

2.Energy and matter are the same. Everything is vibration.Everything that exists is an energy system within a greater energy system.

3.Everything that exists is connected to everything else in a web of energy or life.

4. Unseen/inner/spiritual reality affects visible reality.

The Female Shaman
Welcome to a journey of  the shamanistic powers of the female, the Wisewomen. Wisewomen have existed for thousands of years and still exist throughout the world. They know Mother Earth as the ultimate healer, and have learned to utilize the gifts of of nature. Inside each woman is a being of wisdom, deeply connected to the phases of the moon and the tides of the sea. All we need to do is trust our innate wisdom.

"Part of the ancient vision of the goddess was as protector of cities and the sustaining fields around them. She was not, in this role, always a matronly and maternal goddess, but was frequently depicted as a lusty, loving, sensual woman. The power she wielded did not make her any less sexually vibrant. Indeed, her power was part of her erotic attraction."

"The queens and goddesses of myth and legend show us an image of both strength and sensuousness. While today we often equate women's sexuality with weakness and passivity, our forebears saw such goddesses as Ishtar as especially passionate and sexual because of their power. Ishtar and her sister goddesses are potent images of feminine possibility - a possibility that remains despite the 2,500 years that have passed since she was last worshipped." (
"The Goddess Companion", Patricia Monaghan)

Shamanism refers to a range of traditional beliefs and practices concerned with communication with the spirit world. The feminine form of the word is not "shamaness" but "shamanka", however, here we will use the word "Priestess".

Healing,  gathering and growing herbs and food, keeping communities in balance, presiding over ceremonies and rites of passage, maintaining relations with the dead, teaching, ministering to those in need, communing with nature to learn her secrets ,preserving the wisdom traditions, divining the future, and drumming and dancing with Goddesses, these are feminine shamanic arts.  This what you will learn or remember in our classes here!

Sisters of  The Burning Branch, is our part of the "shaman's tree? an image found in several cultures as a symbol for mediation.  The tree is seen as a being whose roots belong to the world underneath; its trunk belongs to the middle, human-inhabited world; and its top is related to the upper world.

The curriculum of Sisters of the Burning Branch, is eclectic, borrowed from the teachings of many paths, but rooted in Women's Spirituality.

For I bring you a special peace. Know no fear of the darkness for if you
Seek me in the dark, I bring you comfort. Seek me between the footfalls upon
Earth, between the in and the out breath. I am here and I love you.

Guidance and Reflection

In these fast moving and hectic times, influences, distractions,
Interactions, and stimuli flood us. It is important to take periodic breaks
From the fast pace of our lives and return our attention to the quiet place
Where the Spirit rests. Let the sun set on the rest of your day and turmoil
Of your life. Find the time and place to meditate. Meditation is a path back
To yourself, a means of learning to listen to inner guidance. This is your
Time to communicate with Spirit and open up to your inner self.

Affirmation

I will take time out to be quiet and listen.

MAHPIA
CLOUD

Keyword--Compulsion/Addictions
Lakota legend says TATE, the Wind sent his eldest son, Eya, to form the
Cardinal Point in the West. Disobeying his father, Eya went up to the
Mountain where Wakinyan, the Thunder being lives. As punishment, he now
Travels across the earth as Mahpia, Cloud. Mahpia brings the shadow across
The Sun and brings the rain, hail, sleet and snow. Within this cloud, as
Lightning and thunder, travels Wakinyan, hidden from human eyes.

Mahpia’s message:
I am cold and distant. The only heat I know is that of Wakinyan, the
Thunderbeing when he chooses to wrap himself within me. I am loose and
Unformed, at the mercy of the wind. A vehicle of other's ways, I travel
Continuously to sea and continent, bringing nourishment or despair. I wish
For you, as for myself, wholeness. You may see a cloud when you look upon me
But know that I am only a servant without direction. My expression is
Governed and is of others. My true being is unformed constantly changing but
Wishing form and wholeness.

Guidance and Reflection:
It is always time to learn from our addictions and compulsions. Whether it
Be that extra chocolate bar or that habit we have be meaning to give up. In
Order to realise our true dimensions of our personal power we have top begin
To resolve those dissolute habits. Compulsions and addictions cast a dark
Shadow over life, blocking the view of the soul's purpose, clouding our
Focus, and closing in our perspective. Is it time to dispel the cloud
Hovering overhead and begin taking steps to release ourselves from major
Compulsions in our lives? We need to first determine the internal and
External support we require, surrounding ourselves with positive, supportive
People whom will encourage us, freeing our minds and spirits so we can soar.
It is our right to live unshackled and uncontrolled by any addiction or
Compulsion. Whether it be our own fears or fears that others or society has
Imposed on us. Let us all make a commitment to improve our lives, releasing
The disintegrating old so we can create space for the solid, the new.

AFFIRMATION:
I will find the strength to face my compulsions and addictions.
I choose to live my life fully. To claim the right to wholeness, and not
Disintegration.

LAKOTA TEACHINGS.
OKAGA SKA
The South
KEYWORD---GROWTH

TRADITION
Tate, Wind, sent his youngest son, Okaga, to create the last cardinal point
In the South. It is the direction of the Spirit World and all the worlds
Beyond. Fro the South come the warm winds that enable Mother Earth to bear
Her fruits so that she may sustain life. In Lakota tradition the South is
Represented by the colour White.

MESSAGE FROM OKAGA.
I am Okaga, son of Tate, sent forth to a place that was empty. I took a
Stance and created there, a doorway between those with form and those
Without. Honour those yet unborn and those that have left you. They live for
A time in this place, and the doorway is an open one. Do you remember
Sensing, when you were very young, spirits passing you? At that time you
Knew it was a right and natural thing. Now you call yourselves wise because
You have survived some of life’s trials, but have you forgotten the wisdom
Of my gift, the open eye of the untaught child. One should never forget “out
Of the mouths of babes and sucklings? For they have an open eye and receive
Great knowing of the self, the world, and worlds beyond. It is the eye of
Creation as shared by my father Tate, through me.
Receive this gift again—now—and rejoice in it. It is the energy that blesses
Your Mother Earth with the warmth to bear abundant life.
I will visit you in your dreams in the image of the Night Eagle(Owl). Do not
Be alarmed for I talk to you of Growth.

GUIDANCE and REFLECTION.
This is a time of growth for you. Are you willing to accept it? The internal
Work you’ve been doing has paid off. Congratulations. You are about to
Experience the next level of growth and will be rewarded with new ideas, new
Sensibilities, and new vitality. This energy is available to you now, are
You willing to accept it? By setting aside old patterns, old habits and
Addictions, you have cleared ground for the growth that will be yours. Your
Determination, even though you may not be aware of it, has led you to this
Point and will serve you well in the future. Let this experience reinforce
Your future growth and change.

AFFIRMATION.
I will grow into, and not beyond, that which I am capable of at this time in
My life.

LUTA.
THE NORTH—RED.
KEYWORD—Renewal.

Wazi Yapa, son of Tate, the Wind, was sent to the North, the direction of
The Whirlwind and the home of the Vitalizes. It is also one of the four
Cardinal directions. From the North comes the changing wind and the winds
That herald the coming of winter. Winter cold and the ice and snow purifies
Mother Earth and puts her to sleep so that she can rest. She is not unlike
Ourselves in that she needs a time in the cycles of the seasons to take a
Rest. Our Great mother can then renew herself building up her energy so in
The coming spring she can begin to burst forth in all her beauty.

A message of LUTA.

I am the North. I am that peace that comes to all of you in time. Some may
Hate me for bringing the cold, some may accept me, and some may even play
With me. But I am as natural as all the other cardinal points and will come
Around with all the seasons of the year. All I ask that you recognize me.
See me now, hear me now, and share in this treasure. Should you visit with
Me, you would find strength of knowledge like the sure footedness of the
Animals that live in the North. I live in the place of endings and
Beginnings, of change that comes deep at the core. I wish for you to know
Your way to me, that you may be wise, skillful, and strong on the sacred path
You follow.

Guidance and Reflection.

We are part of the natural order and connected to all things. We have
Experienced the year in all its forms and even though we are often times not
Aware of it we experience the energies at every part of the year.
We have been expending energy freely in many areas of our lives. Now, before
Committing our exertions to future endeavors, let us take time for
Contemplation. To regain our strength that we will need in the coming months
And year ahead. A time for renewal means re-acquaintance with the energy we
Have within.
Let us all give ourselves some personal time. To nurture ourselves,
Providing ourselves with what we need physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Filter out any debilitating thoughts and concentrate on putting healthy
Foods in our bodies. During this natural time of renewal let us re-evaluate
The way we expend our energies. Slow down, examining our needs, and look
Within. Get the rest we require and spend some time alone. We can then look
Forward to coming back strong, with restored vigor and drive, ready for the
Coming year ahead.

AFFIRMATION

I will open myself to the gifts of wisdom, vitalization, and completion. I
Give honor to the Spirit of the North—LUTA.

I am the doorway of the Sun. I am where WI, the Sun meets the world in the
Full power of his blessings. I open myself to you in celebration of this
Blessing, this miracle. I offer you each day, a new beginning. Know children
Of the Earth that you may call on me at any time. I welcome you. I exist as
A gift and entity from the Great Mystery that you may experience me.

Guidance and Reflection.
Look to the morning sun and see the light rising in your life; the darkness
Has receded to give way to new light and clarity of vision. A new day has
Dawned and you can now arise with courage, raising your arms to the sky,
Ready to make a fresh start. This is an opportunity to transform your way of
Looking at things, to broaden your view and expand the scope of your
Awareness. Now is the time for inspiration, for the prospects before you are
Clear and unobscured. You can now journey onwards, past any limitations you
May have put upon yourself. For now you understand where you are going.

AFFIRMATION
I give thanks as I greet the rising Sun; I open myself up to new beginnings,
With clarity and illumination.

The Shaman's Quarters

The Circle of Life, the Medicine Wheel, the Sacred Circle is divided into Four Quarters and we consider all aspects of our life in the context of what each Quarter represents. There are Four directions: South, West, North and East. There are Four parts in everything that grows from the Earth: the Roots, the Stem, the Leaves and the Fruit. There are Four kinds of Creatures: those that Swim, those that Crawl, those that Walk, and those that Fly. There are Four Times that we measure our lives by: the Night, the Day, the Moon, and the Year. There are Four levels of Understanding: Innocence, Introspection, Wisdom, and Illumination. At the South is Innocence, the Roots, those that Swim, the Night. This is the time of Conception, when a child floats in the womb of the Mother and absorbs all that She will give. The infant is taught through experience and absorption, and relates all this learning to becoming the Self. At the West is Introspection, the Stem, those
That Crawl, the Day. This is the time of Discovery, when a child explores the World at large. The child is taught through experience, instruction, and relates all this learning to identifying the Self. This is where a child learns values, respect and their place in their Family and Community. At the North is Wisdom, the Leaves, those that Walk, the Moon. This is the time of Practice, when an adult carries responsibility. The adult is taught through experience, honing their skills as they live. This is where an adult claims their place in World and learns the complexity and interconnections between Self, Family, Community, Society and the World. At the East is Illumination, the Fruit, those that Fly, the Year. This is the time of Sharing, when an Elder teaches the wisdom they live. This is when the Elder reconnects fully with Creation and returns to the Creator. And the Circle continues this way.

Native American Healing Traditions

Tools and Healing Practices

Many healing practices and spiritual ceremonies that are being practiced today by healing practitioners and metaphysical groups have been adopted from traditions that originated from various Native American tribes. History indicates that each tribe would have one or more elders who were groomed in the healing arts. These individuals would serve as herbalists, healers, and spirit communicators. The duties and types of healing arts and spiritual ceremonies performed would naturally vary from tribe to tribe.

Tribal Leaders Disapprove of Shamanism Workshops

Today's tribal leaders often frown on terms such as Shamanism, Shaman, and even Medicine Man being used so freely to lure students to learn Native American practices. Disapproval is warranted when seminars and workshops commercially touted as "Native Shamanism" are not purely traditional teachings, but are a packaged blend of studies which include bits of Native American ceremonies along with Wiccan spells, New Age spirituality, and Eastern medicine.

Native American Tools and Traditions

  • Animal Totems: The appearance of birds and animals, either in reality or dreamtime, are considered to be totem messengers offering spiritual guidance.
  • Sweat Lodges: The Native American sweat lodge or purification ritual cleans and heals the body, mind, and spirit.

  • Dreamcatchers: The earliest dreamcatchers (sacred hoops) were crafted for children to protect them from nightmares.

  • Feather Fetishes: Fetishes are sacred objects used as a tool to facilitate an awakening into your whole self, used in prayer, or utilized for protection and healing.

  • Smudge Sticks: Using a smoking smudge wand for purification is part of many Native American traditions.

  • Curanderismo: Blending and evolution of Native and Hispanic healing techniques involving herbs, sweats, diet, and magick.

  • Medicine Wheels: Each direction of the medicine wheel offers its own lessons, color association, and animal spirit guide.

  • Talking Sticks: Passing the talking stick from speaker to speaker is a respectful way to communicate and share opinions. This tradition is especially helpful in keeping disagreements from getting out of hand.
