Chants are simply short songs or sets of words that are repeated over and over and over....until whatever needs to get done is done. Chants can get people into a specific ritual mindset - calming and soothing and centering. Or chants can be used to build energy, bringing it to a peak as the voices (or single voice) grow louder and stronger. A chant can actually be a set of words repeated tunelessly or it can be set to music. Most of the chants that we use are musical chants.

You don't need to have background music in order to use chants in ritual. In fact, most of the time, chants are done a `capella (without instruments) or they are done with a rhythmic, percussive background. The mood that you want to set will determine the background, if any, of the chant.

Chants have long been used as a means of altering one's consciousness in order to commune with the spirit realm, raise power from within, and commune with and connect to the Divine.

Chants can be fast moving, energy raising verses (sounds used for raising the 'Cone' for various magickal workings), or they can be soft, whispered words, heard only by you and the Divine, for the purpose of inner exploration and communion.

The following are a collection of some of the Goddess & God chants, prayers, etc., that I've stumbled across, and have grown partial to.

The Elements

Lyrics

(Pick and choose depending on the focus of your ritual -- or write your own words!)
With water, with fire, with air and with earth,

we call to the Goddess for love and rebirth.

With water, with fire, with air and with earth,

we fill up our circle with laughter and mirth.

With fire, with water, with earth and with air

we call to the Goddess for blessings, love and care.

With water, with fire, with air and with earth,

we ask of the Goddess for laughter and mirth.

With fire, with water, with air and with earth,

we call to the Sun God and welcome His rebirth.

With fire, with water, with earth and with

air we create in this circle a community to share.

We All Come from the Goddess

(this is a round ,,,first chorus is sung then as the second is started the first is started by the second group...I love the one where the men sing the second verse and the women sing the first chorus...there are many ways to sing this...)

We all come from the Goddess

And to Her we shall return,

Like a drop of rain

Flowing to the ocean.

Hoof and Horn, Hoof and Horn

All that dies shall be reborn

Corn and Grain, Corn and Grain

All that falls shall rise again

(Chorus)

Sage and Crone, Sage and Crone,

Wisdom's gift shall be our own.

Crone and Sage, Crone and Sage,

Wisdom is the gift of age.

We all come from the Goddess

And to Her we shall return,

Like a drop of rain Flowing to the ocean.

Hoof and horn,

Hoof and horn

All that dies shall be reborn

Fire and rain, Fire and rain

All that dies shall live again

Chorus

Air and earth, Air and earth

All that dies shall have new birth

Corn and grain, Corn and grain

All that falls shall rise again

(Here is another version of this song/ chant)

We all come from the Goddess

We all come from the Goddess,
and to her we shall return
Like a drop of rain flowing to the ocean.
(Repeat)

Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate,
Demeter, Kali, Innana!
(Repeat)

We all come from the Horned God,
and to him we shall return
Like a spark of flame-rising to the heavens.
(Repeat)

Hoof and horn, hoof and horn,
all that dies shall be reborn
Corn and grain corn and grain,
all that falls shall rise again!
(Repeat)

The Goddess is alive and magick is afoot!
The Goddess is alive and magick is afoot!
(Return to beginning)

Air I Am

Air I am
Fire I am
Water, Earth and Spirit I am.
(Repeat 3 x)
