Bloodstone (Heliotrope) is an opaque, dark green chalcedony with red spots. Like all forms of chalcedony, it is a member of the quartz group. Bloodstone is porous.
Bloodstone has a hardness of 6 1/2 to 7 on the Mohs' scale, and a specific gravity of 2.58 to 2.64. Metaphysical properties of bloodstone:
Bloodstone is said to benefit the blood and circulatory system. Its subtle energies are believed to help purify toxic blood and detoxify the liver, spleen, and kidneys. Gem literature also said to benefit the heart, reproductive organs, bones, and other blood-rich organs.

Ancient Lore In the first century BC, bloodstone was -- accoding the the Greek natural philopher Damigueron-- a preserver of health, and offered protection against deception. During the Middle Ages in Europe it was used in sculptures representing flagellation and martyrdom. It was believed to prevent nosebleeds, remove anger and discord, and to be a remedy for hemorrhage and inflammatory diseases. It was said to be most effective if first dipped in cold water.
