Therapeutic blending

Therapeutic blending focuses on creating a blend that will aid with a particular emotional or physical condition. Therapeutic blending concentrates more on the therapeutic result than on the aroma of the blend, but naturally it’s important to create a therapeutic blend that is pleasing in aroma.

It is very important to select oils not only for the therapeutic actions they deliver. It's also important to make sure that none of the oils used have any contraindications or safety issues that can affect other aspects of your health. For instance, if you create a blend to aid with dandruff but you happen to be pregnant, you should not include rosemary because it is contraindicated in pregnancy. As another example, you would obviously not create an arthritis blend that includes peanut oil (a carrier oil used to dilute essential oils and is reported to provide benefit in arthritis blends) if you are allergic to peanuts.

When creating therapeutic blends, it is also important to consider all the therapeutic actions you are seeing and avoid oils that clash with your desired goals. For instance, let’s say you are having severe period cramps and are having trouble sleeping. For this scenario, let’s also say that you want to create a blend that you can use right before bedtime. Peppermint and cypress are oils that can provide relief with menstrual cramps. But, peppermint and cypress are energizing oils. Thus, you would want to avoid these oils in a blend that you’d use right before bed.

10 Wonderful Ways to Use Epsom Salts

By Annie B. Bond, author of Better Basics for the Home (Three Rivers
Press, 1999).

When magnesium sulfate is absorbed through the skin, such as in a bath, it draws toxins from the body, sedates the nervous system, reduces swelling, relaxes muscles, is a natural emollient, exfoliator, and much more.

* Relaxing and Sedative Bath: Soak in warm water and 2 cups of Epsom Salt.

* Face Cleaner: To clean your face at night, mix a half-teaspoon of Epsom Salt with your regular cleansing cream. Just massage into skin and rinse with cold water.

* Homemade Skin Mask: Apply the mask to damp skin. For normal to oily skin, mix 1 tablespoon of cognac, 1 egg, 1/4 cup of nonfat dry milk, the juice of 1 lemon, and a half-teaspoon of Epsom Salt. For normal to dry skin mix 1/4 cup of grated carrot, 1 1/2 teaspoons of mayonnaise and a half-teaspoon of Epsom Salt.

* Foot Soak: Soothe aches, remove odors, and soften rough skin with a foot soak. Add 1/2 cup of Epsom Salt to a large pan of warm water. Soak feet for as long as it feels right. Rinse and dry.

* Skin Exfoliator: Massage handfuls of Epsom Salt over your wet skin, starting with your feet and continuing up towards the face. Have a bath to rinse.

* Remove Excess Oil from Hair: Epsom Salt soaks up excess oil from hair. Add 9 tablespoons of Epsom Salt to 1/2 cup of oily hair shampoo. Apply one tablespoon of the liquid to your hair when it is dry; rinse with cold water. Pour lemon juice or organic apple cider vinegar through the hair, leave on for 5-10 minutes, and then rinse.

* Hairspray: Combine 1 gallon of water, 1 cup of lemon juice, and 1 cup Epsom Salt. Combine, cover, and let set for 24 hours. The next day, pour the mixture into your dry hair and let it sit for 20 minutes. Then shampoo as normal.

* Hair Volumizer: Combine equal parts of deep conditioner and Epsom Salt. Warm in a pan. Work the warm mixture through your hair and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse.

* Soak Sprains and Bruises: Epsom Salt will reduce the swelling of sprains and bruises. Add 2 cups Epsom Salt to a warm bath, and soak.

* Splinter Remover: Soak in Epsom Salt, it will draw out the splinter.

 Egyptian Spiritual & Purification Bath

The Egyptians used hyssop for purification. To spiritually and ritually
cleanse yourself, buy dried hyssop and make a strong tea with it. Ritually smudge your bath with sage or frankincense and myrrh incense. Light a blue candle, and then pour the hyssop tea into the bath, or over yourself while in the shower. Chant: “I am pure, pure as Isis; I am pure, pure as Osiris; I am pure, pure as Horus.?Repeat or continue the chant adding your favorite
Egyptian gods. If you can find a hyssop-scented bath gel, so much the better! You may also use cucumber and elder flower-scented soap or bath gel, or a “pure?soap such as Ivory.

Invigorating Peppermint Bath
The powerfully minty aroma of peppermint can make an ordinary bath an invigorating experience.

As you fill the bath add 5 to 10 drops of peppermint essential oil. Stir the water to disperse the oil before entering. Alternatively you can add the drops of oil to unscented bath salts or bubble bath: Add 5 to 10 drops per ounce of bath salt or bubble bath and pour the mixture into the tub.

Suggested additions: Replace some of the drops of peppermint with one or more of the following oils to create your own distinctly fragrant blend: spearmint, lemon, basil, rosemary, lavender.

Lemon Ylang Mineral Bath
A lemon and ylang scented mineral bath is a delight for the senses. Not too relaxing, and not too energizing either, this aroma awakens your senses with a clean, sweet fragrance.

Mix together 2 tablespoons of sea salt, 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 1/2 teaspoons of borax. Add 4 drops ylang ylang and 6 drops lemon essential oils and mix well. Pour the mixture into the bath under running water. Make sure the salts are completely dissolved and the oils evenly dispersed throughout the water.

Suggested variation: A few drops of lavender will make this blend more balancing.
