Almost a week without power, emergency aid folks are starting to canvas the out lying areas. The weather has become colder than ever. The daily late twilight light hasn't lifted. Scavengers are also roaming the area, and gunshots are heard periodically.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?????
From: Qyzida Sent: 6/3/2007 12:44 PM
Old Lady Getz died in her sleep last night.
The boys were outside digging a grave for her when a truck from the Marine Base came by with about half a dozen soldiers in it. I was wary at first, but the Officer, a Lieutenant Robbins, convinced me they weren't scavengers.
The soldiers finished burying her.

They told us we looked alot better off than most folks they've found so far. Alot of people went to town and all the shelters are full, so we'd be better off staying where we are.

Lieutenant Robbins tried to give us a gun and a box of ammuntion for protection. I refused, I don't think I could shoot anyone unless they threatened our lives, and the officer said that was exactly why I needed it. So I accepted it he showed me how to work it, and I stashed it on top of the refrigerator.

He also provided us with one of the emergency rations boxes he had which should keep us supplied for at least a week. I told him we were going to need refills of our medications soon and he said he would see what he could do.

He told us what had happened finally, there were reports of a asteroid hitting the earth somewhere in western Alaska. He didn't know how big it was, but that it was expected to change the climate for a long time and the best thing for us to do was keep on doing what we were doing until things leveled out.

He didn't know how long that might be. He also said the area was now under Marital Law, and anyone caught out in the streets before 6am and after 8pm would be shot on site, along with any looters.

I asked if there was any way he thought my husband could get home from Canada.
He looked at me and told me he didn't think it would be anytime soon.
I wondered if he meant that western Canada had been destroyed by this asteroid. But I didn't have the courage to ask.

We offered them food and drink, and thanks with prayers for their safety. They thanked us and told us they would be patroling the area periodically and check in on us again in about a week.

We went about what has become a daily routine, gathering firewood, hauling and boiling water, feeding the animals and gathering eggs and milking the goats, cooking, washing, and praying. We went thru the military rations and locked them in a pantry cupboard, tidied up and went to bed.
I lit a small votive candle for Stewart and prayed to the Goddess for him until I fell asleep.

We were both so exhausted last night we fell asleep and never woke till the morn.  The house was cold because no one tended the stove in the night, the dogs were all around us trying to keep warm.  Den got up and went straight to the kitchen to start up the stove I got the dogs down stairs so they could get some excercise, I notice the cat sitting in the window something he hadn't done for days, being there was nothing to look at outside, but something caught his eye.  Walking over to the window I looked out to see a few crows sitting on the fence post, WOW, crows honey!
Den didn't seem surprised and I shouldn't have been either, they are quite a hardy creature living through some of our worst winters of 40 below temps. and hardly any food.
Finished  a small breakfast, Den reminded me that he was going to take the wagon pick up Bob and head towards town.  I asked if I should go, he thought maybe I should stay home this time, just till they figure out what happening there, but he would leave the walkie talkie for me.
Just then Bob's voice bellow out, which kinda shocked me not use to hearing anyone elses voices but our own.  Den answer him, got his coat the rifle, I could hear Bob telling Den take a couple of gas cans and ciphering hose just incase we find some deserted cars as he walked out the door.
I follow shortly behind him, when we got into the barn we had a wonderful surprise, Camy had her calve and they looked great.  Good now we have milk, got the horse hooked up to the wagon, put some blankets and a cooler with a couple of jugs of water and the gas cans on the wagon and Den was off.
I asked him to please don't do anything risky and try not to be to late cuz I will worry.
Town is 30 mi from us so it was going to be a long day for them, but I sure do hope they find something.
The days seems to be to short, I thought how did our ancestors keep up where did they find the strength.
Den called on the walkie talkie, letting me know they were on their way home and he had lots to tell.  I was so relieved to hear his voice.  But in the back ground there was this popping noises.  I asked what that was, but he must have signed off before i got an answer.
Finally he drove in and had a few boxes besides the gas cans.  Got the wagon unloaded and tended the horse then inside we went.
He had got some supplies, hardware, dry goods, salt, more batteries there was quite a grocery list of things.  But I needed to know what he saw - the town is crazy, there was looting, cars deserted everywhere.  We did bumped into Luke the chief and he said that they were waiting for the National Guard but it would be a while they were very busy taking care of things in the state capital right now.  So he has communication, great!   Does he know what happened, are we at war, or some kind of natural disaster?  Luke said it was a meteor, a big one hit the earth up north not sure of the details yet. Every where is a mess right now.
Luke asked if Bob and I would canvas our area for people tomorrow to see if they are in need and then report back to him.  But our mare can't work that hard, that ok when we went by Sal farm on the way to town he was there and agree to harnessing up his draft team and going together.  Luke said not to use the gas for anything unnecessary right now, so he gave us each 2 cans full and told us that if we need anything just get it and we will settle up later with the folks.
We're pretty much on our own right now so it looks.  Luke says in a few days we'll gather for a meeting but for now let's just find the folks that need our help.
I was looking at our calendar the one we plan out our planting and notice a birthday was coming up in a couple of days, my sister.  Light a candle and pray.

Stay locked indoors, stay as warm as possible, & suffer.  It is an honor for me to suffer.  As long as there is water and a little bit of food we will be okay.  Will conintue to read, meditate, & exercise if I feel up to it.
Day Six:

First Aid people came by the house this morning. They said that there has been trouble in the area, but things are pretty under control now. I guess some people are starting to get really desperate. We still have no idea what's going on, the First aid folks said that there has been a lot of talk about different natural disasters from what they could hear, but they wouldn't really tell us anything. We've definately come into a routine now, making food and washing and setting up fires since it's been so cold. I wish we could grow our own food, but we never planted more than herbs and fruit trees out back. We have a lemon tree, a small orange tree, and an avocado tree, and we picked all we could, but I don't think the trees will bear fruit anymore. There is never really a change in the weather for us here. Sometimes we hear thunder in the distance, but it's just been getting colder. We've had to wear a lot of layers and such ust to keep warm at night, with multiple blankets. My best friend finally made her way over again this morning, this time she's staying for good. Her boyfriend stayed back at their house to help him mother, but he'll probably be making his way with us. We talked about what to do if the baby comes early, and how we will set up for the birth if she comes on time. If she's on time we're going to make a luke warm bath for her, and have her walk until she goes into labor. My mother-in-law mostly knows what to do, she's had three children, I would assume so. I want to help out as much as I can. It kind of made me laugh today to think of Native American women, and how they handled their births. If they were traveling, they would just stop and squat, give birth, then keep walking, no big deal. Nowadays with the epidurals and such, well not so much anymore, I am kind of happy that she can experience giving birth at a home. I'm glad she's here. We were getting a pretty good rythm, but she's helping out as much as she can, until she feels to rest, which isn't a big deal at all, we have a ton of room here at the house. Not sure really where to go with things yet, just hoping the air clears up so we can see the sky at some point, though I don't expect it. We are going to run out of supplies eventually, but at least we have lemons to fight scurvy, haha. We are well armed though, so we are protected and we have enough to last us about three weeks from now, then we'll have to go out again. I've been meditating, and writing in my journal, and making sure that I follow my studies in what books I have available. Maybe tomorrow will be different. We can only hope.
