This is Day # ONE.. .and each day after is the Next day folowing the desaster...lol..ok..go for it... and think about all the things you need to "rethink ..to use no electricity... From: MystikalSummerStarr | Sent: 5/29/2007 12:49 PM | So the first thing I would think about was what to do with the food, so I would have to dig a hole in the ground far enough for the food to stay kool. I would have to find away to keep warm if it was a time for heat so wood would what I would ahve to heat with. I would not have gas to runa chain saw , so I would have to have an ax. To wash my cloths I would have to lug water from the creek and warm it on the outside fire for washing. I would have to hang the cloths on the line to dry. I would need to use my needle and thread to sew instead of my sewing machine. I would also have to grow my own food, to eat. As a community we would have to get a school going in are neighborhood becasue the school is a long was away and the kids would not be able to get to a school everyday and it would not be running as big as it is because of no electricity. More to come. Mystikal Summer Starr | From:LadyMajykWhisperingOwl | Sent: 5/29/2007 2:43 PM | Good point Mystikal...there will be no way to pump gas...since it takes electricity to run the pumps...and fuel to run generaters... Remember..EACH of you have your own unique set of circumstances so you each need to decide what you will do for your area...see this as Today..May 29th, 2007. at your own home...in your own town and dealing with your own community...think of the neighbors...the stores...where your water source is... You will be dealing with panic..raiding...etc. think about how much you have to work with...Do you have animals? What aboutthem? Keep it going.. I can't wait to hear each person's thoughts on the first day that there is no electricity on Earth... | From: ta-wa-di | Sent: 5/29/2007 2:54 PM | This is very interesting ... and I wanted to know where this would take place, what season is it, etc. I will try to get some thoughts together on this. I lived without electricity in January 98, during the ice storm for 114 hours. I clearly remember what I needed to survive then :)
blessings, Ta'wa'di | From: ta-wa-di | Sent: 5/29/2007 3:25 PM | If you had 24 hours to get all the things you need before the electricity went out, what would you get? how would you live if you could not have no lights, nothing works, there is no pumping of gas or for fuel. How would you fend for your self. What would you do to get your home ready for living a different life? Ilook forward for you post. Love Mystikal Summer Starr

Thank you for this interesting question. I am working toward getting land and building a home where I will not need electricity ... however, that is still in the future.
As I said in a previous post, back in the Ice Storm '98, we had no power where we were living. We were lucky and had no power for 114 hours. There were places where there was no power for two months. It was during the winter and many farm animals froze. Animals were not allowed in shelters, so one lady, an artist, amazing woman, stayed home with her dogs and froze. She saved her dogs, but she died.
So, I have a full tank of gas and money to buy everything to get ready? Then I would make sure I have a lot of candles (tea candles and slow burning candles), matches. I would drive up to the mountains so that I have clean water from the lake. I would need staple foods which do not require refrigeration and would need supplies to pickle or smoke my foods. I would make sure my axe and handsaw is sharp, make sure I have my hammer, nails and other tools handy. Get a hand drill (so you turn on a handle to drill). I would get first aid supplies (bandages, creams, wraps, tape) and make sure I have mops, buckets, brooms and hand dustpans.
Unfortunately, where we live, we are not set up to be able to live on our own, without others help. I would make sure I know my neighbours and have a good relationship with them (another reason why I would move to the mountains, the people in that area are more helpful and help their neighbours than where I am now). We have a very short growing season, and unless we have solar panels and geo-thermal pumps, having a green house would not work either. During the growing season, we can grow some things and then make sure that they are preserved in some way for the winter months. I would probably be eating more meats than vegetables, since I can smoke those. I would stock up on my herbs for healing purposes as well as cooking. Salt is important and flour/grains.
If I were a coffee drinker, I would just get the dust off my coffee grinder. This is good to grind other things, such as grains etc. I would stock up on tea leaves.
I would prepare things for the winter, making sure I have fire wood, matches, an axe to cut though the ice on the lake, my feather beds to keep warm, snow shoes, shovels, gloves etc.
Items to clean, such as baking soda, salt, vinegar would be good as well. And I would probably stock up on toilet paper as long as possible *g*. Kleenex I would use hankerchiefs which can easily be washed. I would make sure I have enough buckets to do my washing and make sure an outhouse is up before the winter months (no power, no toilet or running water). A hand-pump (forget the word for it) would be a good thing to install. It probably would not work too well in the winter (pipes would freeze) but when they are not frozen, it would be good. I would make sure I have barrels to collect rain water as well. This would be good for washing.
For my dogs, I would have to make sure I can get meat somehow for their diet. I would just need to boil water for any vegetables or grains I give them. The meat can be raw. I would probably have to buy a fishing rod. That would be the easiest meat source.
I would get some solar lights for outdoors. Paper, pen nibs and ink to keep in touch with people.
No car. Hmm. Some cars work on wood alcohol. Actually, probably a lot of them would. That was what was used in the depression in East Prussia. Having something to create alcohol from wood would be good. A distiller I guess? ... I could use my bike as well, during the summer. So I would need a hand pump for air. Animal fat would be good instead of oil for the gears. I would have to hook up with someone who can actually kill a deer or something.
During the ice storm, our major problem was heat and keeping our food from spoiling. We heated the house with candles because we did not have a wood stove. I would definitely make sure I had a wood stove. We heated our food with tea candles and used that for lighting as well. Reading books was a great pass time, as well as drawing and writing.
There are hand powered radios out there, but to find them within a day would be very difficult. You just have to wind them up and then they work ?no batteries or electricity. They are really neat.
A big problem would be Vitamin C in the Winter. I would have to find berries and such which have vitamin C and find a way to dry or preserve them for the winter ....
That is all I can think of at the moment ... I'll try to think of more

Yep, thought of my neighbours and I would run for the hills *g* It is just an hour's drive from here and since I have a full tank, I would definitely not stay here. Even if I didn't, I would grab the neighbour's horse and go up there. Definitely would not stay where I am now :)
We are used to having no power here for hours or even days ... so it would not be a panic situation right away. People would just figure it was "normal" ... the important thing for me would be to figure it out before them and run for the hills :))

?I would also: once I get settled, set up a circle and focus and visit many of my witch friends through the astral plane. Just to let them know they can still reach me and I am thinking of them. | From: LadyMajykWhisperingOwl | Sent: 5/29/2007 6:12 PM | Remember that it is TODAY that is happens and you are living in your current conditions.. so think about what you would do if this happend right now..with what you have right now and on your current paycheck...and one tank of fuel. what would you do TODAY...not in general..but right now with hwat you have... this is what the scenario is ...and each person will have their own siruation..there may be duplicate ideas and that is ok..you think of what you do today...then as tomorrow comes ..what you will continue after you have done what you talked about for today.... You gather the things..then tomorrow you will start assemble what you go...then the next day..and so on... think about what you might run out of and how you will deal with this PER DAY.....everything you said was wonderful and very good advice..but see yourself as if it were happening at this moment..and now go from there...each person will have their own "Story"...so eeryone will ceate their own story...Think and then write what you will do each day... so let's go for it..I wish I could be here to see how you do..but I will be back in two weeks so this will be going daily until then...please participate..and lets see where this goes. Warm Blessings ~ Lady Majyk ~ | From: ŞħąđǿŵЄļƒ | Sent: 6/10/2007 7:31 PM | Day One: Electricity is out, and none of us know why. It's muggy out, and humid. All day we were putting frozen foods into ice chests, with what ice we had available so that it would last us a little while longer, and ate what we could before it would spoil. We used a hand juicer for orange juice and such, so that we could at least eat what we normally would. My future father-in-law tried all day to find some kind of signal on the radio, but got nothing. My fiance is worried, we had talked much before on disasters, and what to do if one happened, so he jumped into the car and went just down the street so that he could stock up on canned foods and some medical supplies, just in case. I've been feeling awful all day, heart sick. I had strange dreams last night, of thunderstorms and green lightening. We've been flushing buckets of water down the toilets, trying to keep things clean. Hopefully the power comes back on soon, the cats like to get close to the candles =/. I sure hope things look better tomorrow morning. Shadow | |
