P Pagan- From Latin paganus a 'country dweller' or villager. Today it' a general term for followers of Wicca and other polytheistic, magic-embracing religions. Some prefer that Wicca are called neo-pagan and that pagan refer to practitioners of ancient polytheistic faiths in their more or less original form , such as Astaru, Odinism, etc... Pagans are not Satanists.
Pagandom- Part of the world inhabited primarily by pagans.
Paganism- Any religion other than Christianity, Islam, or Judaism. Generally categorized as an earth religion. Most are polytheistic (have more than one god or goddess). Literally means "country dweller".
Pagan Standard Time- A slang term for when people cannot arrive or get an event going on time. Almost extinct because it was a poor excuse to begin with. Abbreviated as PST.
Pallomancy- Divination with a pendulum.
Palmistry- is the 'reading' of palm features to explain personalities & divine futures of the person. This interesting subject involves much more than just reading 'The Lines', there is shapes of the hand & fingers to consider; how they are held; 7 mounts of Venus, Moon, Mars, Sun, Mercury, Jupiter, & Saturn; nail shapes; there are 'lines' for: affection, fate, head, heart, life, & sun; there are fans, islands, stars, triangles, grilles & branches
Pantheistic- the belief, meaning to see the Divine as everywhere & in everything. Sometimes explained as PANTHEISM is believing that 'God' & Nature are the SAME thing.
Pantheon- A collection or group of Gods and Goddesses in a particular religious or mythical structure, commonly regional i.e. the Greek Pantheon.
Past Life Regression- A technique used by hypnotists to lead a person in a trance which allows them to supposedly recall events from previous lives, when their soul was in a different physical body at another time period and place. Assuming belief in the human soul, this is actually very logical, and can be explained as simply a matter of helping the human mind connect to the soul mind and read the memories stored there.
Pathfinder- Spritual guide, help, or tool.
Patron- A Patron Deity is the particular Goddess or God that one feels most at Home with. Some people have more than one, but usually one will predominate. Any Deity that you are drawn to can be your patron Deity. One’s Patron Deity is prayed to for guidance, visions, blessing, etc.
Pendulum- A tool often used to communicate with spirits or divine. See also divination.
Pentacle- A circle surrounding a five pointed star known as pentagram. Worn as symbol of a witches beliefs and used in magickal workings and ceremonies. Each point on the star has a specific meaning: Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit.The inverted pentagram is used in some second degree intiations,to indicate a function of growth.
Pentagram- The five-pointed star, a familiar symbol of Paganism, occultism, and witchcraft. In America it is always portrayed with a single point upwards, because with two points upward, it is a symbols used by American Satanists. In Britain, two-points-upwards used to be the symbol of the Wiccan Second Degree; British Satanists have always used the inverted crucifix. But many British Wiccans are abandoning the two-points-upward Second Degree symbol as communication with American Pagans increases. The pentagram is a symbol of protection and is not evil.
Pecti-Wita- A Scottish tradition of Wicca, see also Wita.
Peyton n. It is placed at the center piece of the altar, where all consecrations of salt and water occur, and other objects as well. It is also the focal point of the altar. The peyton is the symbolic representative of earth and of the female aspect of the divine.
Philtre-(fil.ter)- A potion, especially for love.
Phrenology- Character analysis by studying the shape and surface of the skull.
Phylactery (fil.ak.tory)- A small leather box containing strips of parchment
Plait - n. A fold; a doubling of cloth, etc.; a braid, as of hair. etc.; vt. To fold; to double into narrow strips. To braid. The act of plaiting a magickal cord is very magickal as one braids (plaits) a spell into the cord to be worn by the priestess.
Plane- mental: the thought process, conscious and unconscious.
Plane, physical- the physical body and its workings, through coordi- nation with mental plane.
Plane, spiritual- a person's perception of life's existence, consisting of belief or lack of belief in the Divine.
Polarity- the concept of equal but opposite energies or powers
Polytheistic- the belief of honoring the Divine through various God and Goddess forms or aspects.
Poppet- A specially prepared herb-stuffed cloth doll that is used in "sympathetic" magick rituals to represent a person at whom a spell is directed. It is common for many wiccans and modern Witches to use poppets for purposes of healing and, when called for, binding. Although poppets may resemble Voodoo dolls, Witches do not stick pins in them or use them in any type of cursing spell which would deliberatly violate the Wiccan Rede.
Potion- An herbal tea or brew ised by Witches in many magickal or healing rituals. In order to work properly, a potion must be prepared during the appropriate phase of the moon and made with herbal ingredients possessing the correct magickal properties. Potions are traditionally brewed in a cauldron and are used in all facets of the magickal arts. Potions concocted for the workings of love magick are often called "philtres".
Power- personal: the energies which sustain the body and are used in Magick.
Projective Hand- A term often used in ritualism to describe your most powerful hand, generally the one you write with.
Prana- The vital force of the Cosmos as it operates on the Etheric level, permeating everything; A powerful healing energy which emanates from the human body. It is controlled by the mind, possesses polarity, and has properties similar to other forms of energy but is a distinct force unto self.
Precognitive- is the act of knowing something before the event. Opposite of RETROCOGNITIVE: knowing something after the event or in the present. That 'knowing' that something has happened
Premeval Deity- God/dess before creation, being both feminine and masculine, both spiritual and physical, resolving all opposites and polarities and containing within Itself all things. Primeval Deity is both the origin and the destination of existence, the inner soul of all creation. Primeval Deity is most often represented as the Androgyne or the Crone.
Priapic Wand- n. a wand made out of a tree branch...many times of Oak , with an acorn attached to the tip and adorned with ribbons and streamers. This is a phallic symbol of fertility and is used in many fertility rites. In the rites of spring, it is used by dipping the wand in sacred oils or water which is then sprinkled on plants and around gardens in a ritual to wake up the flora and insure good blooming and crops. At Imbolc it is also laid in the Bridgid bed accross the grain dolly representation of the Goddess (forming an X) to repersent their courtship and conjoining. This is a simple ritual that is meant to bring fertility to the Earth as well as life fertile with insight,good health, prosperity, and magickal power.
Priest- A male dedicated to both his choosen deities and humankind. A High Preist is a male leader of a coven or a wiccan organization and play a the role of the God in certain ceremonies.
Priestess- A female dedicated to both the service of her choosen deity or deities and humankind.A high priestess is a feminine leader of a coven or wiccan organization that plays the role of Goddess in certain ceremonies.A solitary witch can be a priestess by dedicating herself to a particular God or Goddess.
Projective Hand- (a more complete dscription than above)The hand that is normally used for manual activites.The hand you favour i.e. right or left handed. It is symbolically thought to be the point at which personal power is sent from the body. In ritual, personal power is visualized as streaming out from the palm or fingers of the hand for various magical goals. This is also the hand in which tools such as the athame and wand are held. Ambidextrous persons simply choos which hand to utilize for this purpose. The hand used for giving gifts. You other hand is considered the "receptive" hand and is the one you would use to receive gifts...This is the hand through which energy is recieved into the body.
Prophet- One who receives inspiration, information, or insights into the future from a divine source.
Proselytizing- the act of trying to convert another from their religion to your own. Vigorous, annoying, and attacking Christian proselytizers are called Thumpers (Bible thumping), and Fundies (Fundamentalists).
Psychic Awareness- The open state of awareness in which the conscious mind can tap into the psychic mind.
Psychism- describes the state in which information from the psychic mind is available to the conscious mind. Greek: 'psyche', the soul. NOTE: a 'Psychic Assault' or attack, is when a person tries to impose and intervene THEIR will, over another's.
Psychokinesis- the act of mind over matter, or mind controlling matter by mind alone.
Psychometry- the ability to receive & interpret vibrations from inanimate places & things. See: Empath.
Psychic Mind- The sub- or un- conscious mind which is receptive of psychic messages. When we are psychically aware, the two minds link and we can intercept these messages.
