Making a Yule Log

In our house, it was traditional to make Yule Logs for our home and for the homes of our friends and loved ones. We too…made certain to place logs at the gravesites of those that have passed. Maybe some of you have already made them before but for those that haven’t I wish to share a simple way of doing so?/FONT>

1)      Choose a log, preferably one that has a slightly flat side so that it won’t roll

2)      If you can (or have someone do it for you) make 3 holes on the rounded side with a drill or chip with a small chisel and hammer, large enough to place candles into the holes and deep enough so that they won’t fall over (for safety purposes)

3)      For the home…we used 1 white (for clearing the year that is leaving us) 1 red (for love) and 1 green (for prosperity in the upcoming year). It helps to wrap the bottom of each candle with aluminum foil for safety purposes and it does secure them in place better.

4)      For our deceased loved ones, we used 2 white candles (for spiritual peace and everlasting life) and 1 red in the center (for our love for them).

5)      Once the candles are in place, we would decorate the log with holly, silk poinsettias, pine cones and fresh pieces of pine that we saved from the bottom of our tree. Attach with small nails or staple gun.

6)      Then we would take a very long piece of red velvet wide ribbon ?folding about 4 inches or so (leaving about 7 inches as a starting piece) back and forth until we had a fairly good sized bow made, then pinch it all together, leaving another longer piece as the ending pieces as you had when you started. Take the pinched pieces and twist with thin wire or small pieces of twine or even a rubber band works (I prefer the wire).

7)      Lastly; we would spray the entire log with a cheap brand hairspray (lacquer) and then sprinkle gold or silver glitter on the wet hairspray quickly. When dry hairspray it again to hold the glitter in place!

8)      FINISHED and Beautiful at that!

I do hope that you will try it and be careful with tools and candles for safety purposes!

Have a joyfilled Yule!
