I played in a club game sunday  with a novice and bidding was:

1nt x p   and I with my 3  points "pulled it to 2 spades.
We were vul  and she having  2 spades went to 2nt
Anyway I was told I should not have  bid since we were vul and  we have to much to lose  - 200  -300  etc as oppose to maybe  180   or  280 etc
I never think of this at the table..  first of all  I have never learned the  scores
and I  go on automatic  and bid what I think I am SUPPOSE to do.
I now am studying the scores  and hopefully will know the cost and can use  some judgemnt instead of going on autopilot  next time.

You are right, Ginny, knowing the scoring is a very important part of the game.

But that is beside the point.  In this hand you pulled the double showing a weak  hand.  Your partner should have respected that and passed.

Many play, and many recommend:   Systems ON over DBL and 2C interference.
That way you can transfer to Sp and pass.

Did you see the word "novice", Don?  She might be brand new to transfers, let alone whether they are on over interference.  I think it is wonderful that Ginny played with a new player.  I do it once in a while and it is hard to get your game down to those very basics.   I think she made the right bid for the situation at the time, regardless of the "helpers" at the table, and she might have diplomatically mentioned that.

btw the hands were set up for the rookies.   I think  mainly so they would be playing the hands  or basic bidding problems.   I think this one was one the opener (rookie) should play 1nt  and my partner should have passed.
