I cost our team a (relatively) important online team match with this bid. My pard says I might have done better.

imps all vul

Axx
KQx
Q109x
AKx

1D(too strong for 1NT in our methods) 1S 2H 2S

at this point I thought I was too strong for 4H with likely spade shortness so I bid 3S. The auction continued

1D 1S 2H 2S
3S 4S 5D P
?

Alan,

What are your forcing pass agreements here? For me, 3S sets this as a forcing pass, and pard by bidding 5D is showing a purely offensive hand.

I'm going to slam under this premise - 5NT, pick-a-slam

I figured that out...thus the delete of my post.   :)  I didn't have any other immediate ideas to post other than now you're bidding in the 'blind'.  Six hearts is my guess, altho a cue bid of 5 spades might be interesting.

If pick-a-slam isn't in the arsenal, 6C would also communicate a willingness to try for grand.

Grand has some play here if pard's on the right cards because of our black suit holdings being so super. I didn't watch this hand of your match, but I hope pard wasn't on a hand with 2-5-3-3 shape....

I bid 6D

Unfortunately pard has x, AJ10xx KJxx QJx so we lost 13 imps

Alan,

Did it go down or hearts 4-1 or something?

Diamonds are 5-0 and 6H makes if they don't lead diamonds.

I agree with your Partner .

But i think is so easy to find the lead after 5D.

I don't agree with your partner. It's imps and the 2 pitches on long H's could be crucial to get a 12th trick. Bad luck.

I think 3S says, "I have heart support and too strong to bid 4H"

5D says, "I have controls and strength here, how does that help for slam"

So, 6H

6D would never occur to me because I think 3S sets the heart suit as trump and everything after that relates to playing hearts.   At this point I would bid 6H.

For those who say 3S sets trump, what do you bid with xx, x, AKQJxxx, AKx?

But even if it does, can't pard correct to hearts if he meant 5D as a cue bid?

Note that the only reason 6H works is diamonds are 5-0 and hearts are 3-2 and still they can beat 6H with a diamond lead.

Guess the lesson on this hand is do not bid slam when trumps are 5-0.
