We went wrong  on this hand  since we both are not  REAL  experienced with cue bidding  and  after the  hand asked Dutsa  how we should have bid  and she said  Darla needs to bid 4 ds  not 3nt   (which  Darla  bid  out of  not knowing what to say  but keeping bidding open)   Soooooo  now my question is:
1.  How does one know  if she had  bid  4 Ds  that it is not the Ace  or do I need to know
2. Are there rules for cue bidding  first or second round controls?.
3..  After the  D   double I was concerned about the D suit   Is there a way to ask partner just that ?

Lots bid 2S  instead of  nmf  and after the d  double I wish I had   since  Id have gone blindly  off to 4nt  like everyone else

i like 2s much better then 2d.  i try to never use an artificial bid that an opp may double to show their suit.  not always possible of course, but in this case 2s works fine.  after your pard bids 3nt you know there is a diamond stopper there.  if pard bids 4d, then you can still blackwood and find out aces.  at least in this case, if pard had kx opps has pinpointed the location of the ace for you.

I think this sequence asks about second round control of diamonds, someone please weigh in if I have it wrong:

   Pass      1C        Pass
   1H        Pass      1NT       Pass
   2D!       Dbl       2H        Pass
   2S        Pass      3C        Pass

I like destiny's suggestion. 4C will get partner to bid 4D with either 1st or 2nd round control.

It is up to partnership agreement whether cue-bids initially show only 1st or 1st or 2nd. The modern thinking is to show either b/c you can use blackwood for aces later.

This is especially true when starting cue-bidding below game.

The other bid that 'asks about diamonds only' is called 'voluntary bid of 5 major'.

If it went the same up to 3nt...

1c   1h
1nt   2d!
2s    3c
3s    3nt
5h!             asks to bid 6 with second round control of the 'unbid' (or artificially bid) suit
