This is a (sort of) basic play problem where you have to draw inferences from the opps play. It is from Sundays 1pm tournament - I am reconstructing the hands from memory because they have been deleted.

West       North        East        South
4c         pass         pass        4d
pass       5d           all pass

The lead is AH from west followed by a low spade which you take in hand with the 10S.

Dealer West, both vul.

           North

S K J 5
H J 9 7 3
D A J 9 5
C A 8

                           South

S A 10
H 10 8 6 4
D K Q 10 8 6 4
C 7

let me try Ross  Usually I am a lazy thinker BUT:::
I am assuming its to make here and not defensive play:
From the get go I see 2 heart losers at first glance and the Ace heart already lost!
So how do I  only lose 1h?  I can get a discard on my  spadeK
West has a Singleton Ace H !!! Cannot make if he has another heart!
So after taking 10 spades , and pulling in all trumps cash spades Lead a low club to Ace on board  and lead another club discarding a heart from hand
giving west the lead!!  WEST has no more hearts , so whatever he leads you get a ruff and a discard of another heart
So lose Ace heart, discard a heart on  spade K , discard a heart on low club and last discard on whatever west plays:-)  Sounds good to me , but can one fugure this out in 7 minutes?

Well done Morgann :)

As for recognizing it in 7 minutes... I find the more you play the more you quickly recognize certain 'types' of hands quickly
