On almost every table of 31 tables south opened 1h and west made the somewhat risky overcall of 2 clubs. But only on 6 tables did north/south find their trap pass and reopening double. 2c went off 5 for -1400 so it was worth over 11 imps gain to find it.

I think one of the main differences between strong players and weaker players is the ability to penalise opps when they make an unfortunate or risky overcalls.

On most tables North took some action - immediately losing the ability to penalise the overcall. And on some tables where North passed south did not reopen with a double - the trap was sprung, but the opps were let free.

Trap passing after an overcall is relatively easy.

When you have length and strength in the opps  overcalled suit as well as other defensive values and you judge that penalty double is likely to be the highest score then pass!

As opener when it passes around to you if you have shortage in the opps suit and some length in the unbid suits then be aware that partner may be trap pass so double!

If you can get used to trap passing and penalising the opps then they are less likely to make risky overcalls to aid their defense. If they know you have the ability to penalise them for 'speaking out of turn' then they may be a little more quiet.... Where the opps know you don't have this ability you are giving them a free ride.
