A modern treatment is to always bid 1M/1C with less than an opening bid bypassing any diamond suit. This treatment has the following characteristics:

  • Choice of minors when you don't have a 5card major: 1) If u have 5+d, 1D, 2) If u have at least 2c, bid 1C, 3) Bid 1D (4=4=4=1)
  • 1D response = one of 1) less than opener with no 4card major, 2) opener with longest suit is diam
  • 1C-1D-1N = may have 1 or 2  4M
  • 1C-1D-1M = 5+c/4M
  • Responder still bids 1H with 4/4, 1S with 5/5, longest with 5/4
