Here is an old thread related to Barton's most recent ( What's 3C ? )... posted then by none other than Barton himself.  The 1C-1D - 2NT auction is still giving him grief:

 I probably bid 6NT.
In 2003, Barton and I had rarely (if ever before) played together. I had been playing online only since the BC had started, but my first f2f play in over 30 yrs was still 2 yrs in the future. I was probably  afraid 4C wouldn't be taken as Gerber.
Today, with any regular f2f partner 4C is automatic.

Altho Barton doesnt start this as a "who to blame" thread, I have to blame myself for not inventing a 3H/3S bid. Lack of imagination.
However in discussing it last nite, Barton confirmed my fears that his 2NT had truly put me in a tough spot. ie, "what would 4C have been?-natural.
What about 4NT?-quantitative." OhOh.
Exactly the reason I chickened out and bid 6nt when my real inclination was that 7nt was a gimme. I think 4C is gerber, and maybe I should have tried it. I doubt he's going to pass it, but I was really unwilling to risk 4nt which might be passed

1C - 1D - 2NT - 4NT is quantitative

xxx
QJx
AKxx
KJx

A balanced 14 count - you want partner to be in 6NT when partner has 19.or 18 with a 5th club.

AQx         AQx
Axx          Axx
Qxx         QJx
AQxxx     AQxx

If you want to use 4NT Black then bid a forcing 3C or 3D or 3H or 3S then bid 4NT.

I personally hate the dreaded Gerber, however, I am wondering how most would play 4C in the sequence:

1C      1D
2NT    4C

Partner's 2NT rebid = 18,19 balanced
You have 18 balanced..... >>  36, 37 combined.
So, we are possibly off an Ace.

     If we have all the Aces, we are missing a K or a KJ or 2Q or Q & 2J or Q & J.

I was Responder and just bid 6NT.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
                             1NT = 15-17 hcp
  1any, 2NT-jump rebid = 18,19
                   2NT open  =  20,21
             2C, 2NT rebid =  22-24

On any of these Notrump bids, I reserve 4C-jump as Gerber which could determine if missing an Ace,  however, I felt the prospects of a grand would be less than 50%, whereas we should be cold for 6.  Partner's only long suit ( 5 cards ) would have to be a minor.

I'd rebid 2H, reverse, and then pattern out into NT to show this hand. I don't want to lose the major here.

Over the given auction tho, I just get on with it and bid the slam.
