Meckwell is a method for intervening against an opposing 1NT opening bid. It features the following calls: - Double ?shows a single minor or both majors; advancer bids 2? after which intervenor corrects to his actual suit if a minor, or hearts if holding both majors
- 2? 2?/SPAN>; ?shows the bid suit and a major
- 2?/SPAN>, 2? ?shows the bid suit
The convention is named based on the common sobriquet for the partnership of Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell, who popularized it. |

How does that convention fit in with this ACBL General Convention Chart item? I know Suction is not allowed, and this sort of looks like Suction. ACBL GENERAL CONVENTION CHART The conventions listed below must be allowed in all ACBL sanctioned tournament play (other than in events with an upper restriction of 20 or fewer masterpoints and events for which the ACBL conditions of contest state otherwise) and at club-level events with multiple-site overall masterpoint awards. Clubs have full authority to regulate conventions in games conducted solely at their clubs. COMPETITIVE 3. NOTRUMP OVERCALL for either a) two-suit takeout showing at least 5? distribution and at least one known suit (At the four level or higher there is no requirement to have a known suit.) or b) three-suit takeout (at least three cards in each of the three suits.) |

Rather than look at which NoTrump Overcalls are allowed, lets see which defenses to NoTrump are allowed: 7. DEFENSE TO: b) natural notrump opening bids and overcalls, except that direct calls, other than double and two clubs must have at least one known suit. |

meckwell is popular and legal GCC. Meckwell 2N shows both minors. A modified Meckwell (also legal GCC) includes both minors in the 2C bid. A Meckwell advantage is that 2H & 2S are natural which are the most common and disruptive bids. Because the Meckwell dbl is conventional, it may not be a good convention against weak or mini NT. |

So, did I read that wrong? |

Sorry, JoAnne, you read it wrong. Your Section 3 concerns a conventional 1N overcall of a 1-of-a-suit opening bid. Bill's Section 7 concerns the defense to a 1N opening bid. |

I use this, Nickel, or Lionel as my preferred defense versus strong NT. |

Ok, I know that Suction is not allowed, so how is this double different from Suction, that makes it legal? Suction Suction is used to overcall opponents' one notrump opening. The brief summary of Suction in the Bridge Encyclopedia is as follows: 2C = diamonds, or hearts & spades 2D = hearts, or spades & clubs 2H = spades, or clubs & diamonds 2S = clubs, or diamonds & hearts
Presumably this leaves X for penalty, although it isn't stated. |

The GCC permits double and 2C (against their 1N) to have ambiguity with regards to suits. The Suction 2D, 2H and 2S bids do not promise a known suit and are not exempted from that requirement. In Meckwell, those three bids all promise the suit bid. Only the Meckwell double does not promise a known suit, and that is specifically allowed (same for the Capp 2C bid). |
