The 2D overcall can be justified only by "I paid my entry fees and it was my turn to bid so..."

Anyone making such a call clearly earns 100% of any blame for whatever happens from then on. Advancer is blameless.

Guess I will take my lumps on this one as pard and the others at the table say I need at least 14 pts for my 2D bid. All I wanted was a diamond lead as RHO was likely to be declarer in 3NT or 4H. My question is, how likely are we to be cold for 3NT when the opps are in a game forcing auction?

I hate to say this, but it is NOT your fault. Pard
did not use bridge logic to realize that your bid is purely
lead directional and should be passing to await further
developments.

Let's see. Pard adds up the points and realizes someone psyched. Not likely responder. So either opener or overcaller does not have their bid. Who to trust: Pard or Opp?

If you know pard will sometimes overcall on trash, you trust the opps and pass. If you trust your pard, then you have to reveal opener's psyche and show your nice hand.

It's not a bad agreement to have 2D in an auction like this show something along the lines of a very sound weak two. Even a 15-point hand with a bad suit isn't too eager to seriously compete.

AT98xx looks more than a trick shy, even if you have that agreement (and it looks like you don't.)

Interesting point Barton makes re psychers. But even if opener HAS psysched, responder cannot pass 2D. A natural 3NT would be a strange animal in this auction, and a natural 2NT is even stranger.

I would not bid in north's position.
south's bid is a bit risky, but I think I would make the 2 diamond bid as well.

The other day I had a similar hand with a club suit. i did not overccall it. Opps bid a sketchy 3nt bid which made. A Club lead would have set it. My failure to overcall gave us a zero. There might have been others that didn't overcall clubs, i don't know, but then their opps weren't in 3nt.

Interesting point Barton makes re psychers  Huh, I don't think I commented.

Anyway even if North correctly determines you have crap and are lead directing you still go -3 for the same zero

2D will not get dbled, East will support hearts and they will get to 4H down 1 when North shows up with 3 natural trump tricks. Even if pard had raised to 3D(which I consider reasonable with no club stopper), it would be had to dbl with D Jx and 3 card heart support. Only because of our struggling auction were the opps were able to dbl even with the undisclosed heart fit.
