From: reds903 (Original Message) | Sent: 6/7/2002 9:18 PM | For those of you who don't already know ironside (Jim Clark) died today at the age of 55. He was the victim of MS and eleven years ago had a stroke in which he lost the use of his hands. At that time his wife left him and he spent the last 11 years by himself. He had three outlets - his computer, the phone, and television. The last few weeks of his life his computer was down so he could not even watch his friends and their discussions in the lobby chat. 3 or 4 weeks ago he started feeling especially bad and was in the hospital for 13 days and they could not really find out what was wrong with him. He was in pain and his organs were beginning to shut down. He finally stopped fighting and quit eating last Thurs or Friday. He was admitted to the hospital on Sunday with pneumonia and quickly went downhill. He was one of the first people I met here in the bridge club and we became great friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor and would joke about his handicaps. He could always make me laugh when I was down. I admit he had a short fuse and would lose his temper at times but got over it just as quickly. He was very loyal to his friends. The zone will never be the same without him for me. I am sure he went straight to bridge heaven as he did his suffering here on earth. May God bless him and watch over him. One day I was very upset with how he was feeling and I cried. He told me to wait until he died to cry for him so if this is soggy it is from my tears. Bye Jim and may you now finally be at peace and painfree. | | I never saw the crochety side of Ironside. The first time I played against him, he held two stiff kings against me and won tricks with both of them. Not long after that, he dropped one of mine and from then on the war of words was on (always in fun!). I am sorry to hear of the difficulty of the last days of Jim's death. You were a good friend to him, reds. You have both my respect and my sympathy. I will remember Ironside fondly. NDakota Noreen | | Reply

| | Jim, I, always admired your spunk and tenacity. It was a delight to meet you, play with you and oppose you. The Bridge Club is a better place because of your membership here. We learned from you. | | Reply

| | Jim and I used to play some Friday nights. I remember one week he was excited because his laser machine had been updated so it both simulated a 'click' and 'a double click'. He was pleased because it meant he would be able to play faster but he told me he understood 'for the first time what misclicks are'. About the third hand he was in a good 6s contract and he demonstrated this new capacity to misclick - which cost an 18imp swing. He was mortified but we had lots of jokes about it...and we ended up coming 3rd just missing 1st by 0.2imp avge. | | Reply
| | Jim was a formidable opponent and a tremendous partner when I was lucky enough to play with him. His courage and the way he never complained were awesome and I loved his sense of humour. I still smile as I remember his pre-tournament foot massages. Rest in peace Jim - luv ya | | Reply

| | Jim told me a lot of people in the zone had called him rude...I said Jim do you think it has anything to do with you leaving and not even saying good-bye to your partner???He informed me that he always just left. I said well partner that is rude... From that time on he always said Good-night love see you soon. then he followed it with his famous HEHEHEHE...His humor in spite of all his handicaps was a real treasure and I will miss him always...Joanie | | |

| | I will miss you, Jim. You are my very first memory of the Bridge Club, when I was finding my feet there. I cannot ever forget the old ( pre June 2000) Individual Monday 9AM game. You were a regular then in that game & was the only game I could find, then, as nobody would pair up with me in other games. The memories I have of that game will never fade. The only time I ever saw table 75 being used. Lorne would be sitting there as South, you went to 75 & sat down, & he would announce ironside IN. We played a few as pards there, I recall & found you a wonderful player. Will look to playing the individual again some Monday at 9AM PST. somewhere beyond, at table number 75!! May peace be yours, forever, my friend. | | Reply

I admired him so much for his tenacity and his humor under the circumstances in which he lived. And thank you reds for all you meant to him. God bless him and keep him. | | |

Ginny, Thanks so much for bringing these memories to the front for us, such nice memories brought a tear to my eye. Must share the story of a partner of mine while preparing for the game looked at Jim's cc to read the information re his special bidding technique, explaining that bids may be slower than the norm. My partner then proceeded to compliment Jim for his perseverance as well as putting him on a pedestal for being such an inspiration to us all. The funny part was once the hands were up my partner (whom I enjoy and respect) proceeded to tell Jim to hurry up please, not once but twice. I commented to my pard what a nice move, lol, to which he replied it was only a reflex action. He was most embarrased and apologised only to do the same thing on the very next hand. I sent Jim a message, commenting that my partner was a real live one. He just laughed and said for sure. I played with Jim quite often and enjoyed and admired such a man. |
