In a recent tournament I had my usual share of points and a enthusiastic partner.We had the following hands as NS. AHB6 AHV542 - AV10 V7542 103 9 B108 AH975 VB102 H75 9862 984 763 8643 B43 The bidding was as follows. 1 diamond-double-2 diamonds pass-pass-3 diamonds I bid as cheaplly as possible 3 hearts which my partner enthusiastically raised to 6 hearts. How did I make this contract.? Solution 2/8 |

Hi Pukkie. Cute problem. I see a solution, but will give others a chance for a few days. H=K, V=Q, B=J Remove extra 4S in West hand AD lead |

This is how I played the 6 hearts. I trumped A of diamonds and noticed E signal with Q.I cashed in AK of hearts and was disappointed that the hearts weren't divided 2-2 .Given his opening W almost certainly had K of clubs and Qof spades. E had QJ of diamonds.I left 1 trump .E had at least 4 diamonds .With Q doubleton in E .W would have had 5-5 low and E would not have bid 2 diamonds but 2 spades if he had a 4 card..Idecided to play E for 10 douleton in spades so in trick 3 I played J of spades. If W takes I trump the returned diamond ,play another round of trumps and play Aof spades.9 of spades is then my entry for the cut in clubs. If W doesn"t take Iplay AK of spades. E can trump but I make the rest of the tricks. If he doesnt trump I trump 6 of spades and play the cut on K of clubs. If E trumps 6 of spades I can use 5 of hearts to get to my hand with the 7 of hearts. |
