Overweight children....do parents have any control over their child's weight gain?

yes of course they do , when you see extreme cases of children dangerously obese i think its child abuse, very scary topic as  you see it more and more lately.

Yes they do. It makes me so angry when you hear parents say "what can I do they just go to the cupboard and get chocolate and crisp". Isn't the obvious answer not to buy them.

Yes of course parents have control over their childs weight gain and I can't see how anyone can disagree, unless the child has a medical condition, it all comes down to discipline in the end because if the child shouldn't eat certain foods, for whatever reason, then the parents should be strict enough not to allow the child that food. If that means not having it in the house then so be it. My daughter is a little tubby, not obese, but because of this I don't buy sweets, cakes, chocolate, crisps etc. Yes it means her brother doesn't get them but they don't mind. They get a few from the grandparents but that is only occaisionally.

With most obese (some are caused medically) children parents have all the say. If you teach them to eat right they will. If you don't buy crap they can't eat it. Health is important in my family.

yes of course they do . I had a case in my relatives that when  baby , my sister in law obliges is baby to eat to much  now her daughter has 8 years old and the doctor says that she needs to loose weight and is  mummy is trying but is difficult because the girl wants to eat everything.  many times is  parents fault

In todays society its a growing epidemic, changes in the atmosphere can contribute to these things but above all else parents have become pushovers imo,if their child wont eat anything healthy they give them something nasty to eat
Did any of you watch Can Fat Teens Hunt?A girl on there used to text her mum to bring her dinner to her!!!!If i was her mum i would be like no you want it you come and get it yourself

I dont think that the obese kids prob is just due to diet!

I think kids should have sweets and treats but in moderation to the rest of their diet!  I hate that schools are forcing upon us that kids cant have sweets ect.
I often think that it is down to the conveniance meals we serve out kids, what is wrong with cooking a meal like our parents and grand parents did!  Spag bol takes 10 mins!

What about the fact that most kids dont get much exercise now?  Kids cannot go out and play because it is too dangerous or they wanna play with a playstation ect!  And how many kids actually walk to and from school?

I think children are obese because we live in a lazy society!  Where we buy a quick meal and jump in a car!

Parents do have some control over this.  My personal view and how my kids are brought up is...................
They have choc, sweets, crisps ect in moderation and as treats.
They also walk to and from school, except in severe weather!  They do activitys after school and we go to the park at least once a fortnight!
And it works for us!!
