Pick up the biggest cardboard box at the supermarket. With a little imagination, it can be turned into a car, boat, bus, house....who needs proper toys?
Pay a visit to your local library - for a small fee, you can borrow toys to play with at home, and roadtest bigger toys before deciding if they are worth the expense. To find your nearest library, call 020 7255 4600 (0131 664 2746 in Scotland, and 01874 622097 in Wales) or visit www.natll.org.uk
If it's too rainy to go out, have a carpet picnic. Pack a hamper with your tots favourite snacks, spread a blanket out on the floor, and invite teddies to join in the feast.
Raid the house for everyday objects that make great playthings. A pair of saucepan lids will double up as cymbals, and a clothes airer draped with sheets is a fab den.
Do some baking, it will get your child interested in food, and everyone will have fun. Simple ideas include, decorating plain biscuits with icing, and adding toppings to ready-made pizzas.
