My dog lady can be fast asleep on the floor but as soon as one of the grandchildren comes in she runs to the fireplace and starts walking backwards and forwards in front of it, licking and sniffing it. The fire is not usually on and she never does it if there are just adults in the house. I have never seen a dog do anything like this before and wonder if it has something to do with her being a border collie or if she's just crazy (which wouldn't surprise me).

Does anyone have any ideas?

No idea hun, but collies are very very clever dogs, maybe look on the internet

no idea sorry , maybe with the dog being such a clever breed it is trying to keep the children away from the fire, i wouldnt worrie about it i have a staffordshire terrier and she is loopy , she is like a kangeroo and has now gotten into the habit of hunping the childrens toys even though she is female lol, so very strange and soooo embarrasing
