Just as one might mix vintage and modern dinnerware at the table--setting a sleek, square serving dish, for instance, on a woven-check napkin--foods offer opportunity to mix classic ideas with contemporary flair. For a sophisticated starter, we grilled old-fashioned pickled shallots and garlic with bite-size cubes of peppered and seared beef sirloin, then placed them on garden-fresh basil leaves.
