Candle Crafting
Supplies
You will need your candle mold and wicking, paraffin wax, wax paper, a double boiler, mold seal, wax dyes or crayons, candy thermometer and cooking spray.
Candle Molds
You can find things around your own home to use as candle molds. Tin cans, pans and flower pots are just a few items you can use.
Cut the wicking approximately 4 inches longer than the height of the mold that you have chosen to work with. Melt some of the wax in a double boiler over low heat. Soak the wick in the wax for about 5-10 minutes.
Remove the wick and place it on the wax paper to dry, making sure that the wick is straight. Spray the inside of you mold with cooking spray, it is important to make sure that your mold is watertight before pouring the paraffin wax into it. Seal it with mold seal. Use a bit of mold seal to secure the wick to the bottom of your mold.
Tie the other end of the wick to a skewer or stick and place it on the top of your mold.
Melt the rest of your wax in the double boiler, make sure the temperature of the wax does not exceed 200F. Use the candy thermometer to keep track of the temperature of your wax. Next lower the heat and add your dye or crayon to the wax. Stir all until it is dissolved, then pour all of this into your mold stopping a few inches from the top.
Let cool until firmly set, approximately 2 hours. Your mold will be hot, so handle with oven mitts to avoid burns. Top up the candle when it has cooled with more paraffin. When the candle has completely set, remove the candle from the mold with the stick that you had attached the wicking to. To make scented candles, simply add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the wax while it is melting.
