Pathworking (also known as guided imagery) is a technique of guided meditation, with the guidance taking various levels depending on the specific instance. it is used for exploration of the self, symbols, and your relationship with nature, divinity, the higher self, other life forms, etc. One of the most useful aspects of Pathworking is the free rein it gives to the imagination, and indeed it is a good tool for helping develope the creative imagination and powers of visualization. It is important to remember that you are not hampered by the mundane constraints in Pathworking, interaction with myths and fantastical creatures and being often occour and are usually very beneficial.
Experience has shown that 10-20 minutes is the optimum length for a Pathworking, and 30 minutes the effective maximum. It is very difficult to mentain comcentration for longer Pathworkings, with people often falling asleep!

Totally Guided - The Guide describes the landscape, encounters and everything else in great detail. This tends to be useful for people with little or no experience who may have trouble visualizing. It also keeps the group in a very similar mind-set and often produces strong group rapport. |

Guided with Interaction - the Guide describes the landscape and encounters but leaves detail to the vision of the individual, asking how they see the road, person, animal, etc; giving the individual's unconsious a chance to fill out the detailwith its own (usually relevant) detail. This technique is useful for people who can visualize fairly well, and for psychological work exploring aspects of the self. |

Interactive Group - starts with one person describing their vision, and other members of the group then describing their vision, building up a group experience. This is good for a group of people who wish to build up group rapport, meshing their symbol systems and helping to build a group egregore. |

Astral Doorway - where one person guides everybody through a symbol, such as a Mandala, Tattva (or other elemental symbol) or Tarot Trump, and then everybody explores the landscape they find themselves in, learning lessons appropriate for them. Good for more advanced work, and self-development. |

| Beginning a Pathworking | | | | To start a pathworking you need to change from an ordinary state of consciousness to a more astral and mental state where you can do the pathworking. Close your eyes and relax, adopt a comfortable posture, it is worth spending a few minutes clearing your mind. Then visualize the room you are in, in your minds eye, and when you can see it clearly, see the room start to fill with a white mist, which coalesces and obscures everything until you are floating in a sea of white mist. Then see the mist slowly dispersing and clearing to reveal the landscape of the pathworking you are about to go on.
When doing any pathworking as a journey, it is a good idea to retrace your steps and end the pathworking where you started. this helps mentain clarity between experiences of the pathworking and ordinary consciousness, giving a clear demarcation line for ending with.
I do not recommend doing more than three or four pathworkings a week to begin with. After practice you may wish to do more, but for the first year or so I would not recommend more. Excessive pathworking can lead to escapist tendencies. Pathworking is not escapism, it is for helping you to explore yourself and grow. | |
