In Flanders Fields

by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I'm ashamed to say it, but usually I turn off these old documentaries regarding the wars.. A couple of days ago, Bob was watching one about World War 1 and before I finished my cuppa', I was so engrossed in it, that I watched it for over 3 hours.....

One thing that was driven home to me, was the unspeakable horrors that these young men  had to endure...  Actual pictures taken as they happened..  War corespondence has a whole new meaning back then... and the newsmen risked their lives as much as the soldiers..  To see the mangled bodies and faces of the victims, Men who would never see their children, wives, girlfriends, parents ever again.  It struck home to say the least... As sad as the truth is, this reality should be taught and pictures shown in our schools.. not just to buy and wear a Poppy on a given day each year..  Somehow in life, except for such a small minority of people, these heros have been forgotton as we go about living our everyday lives. Yes, there is the Legion and other organizations that will help the survivors and some family members, but history is being  gradually lost.     So sad.!!!!

I think Eric and Mildred are ex-military.. Not too sure.  Maybe Eric could enlighten us, if he want's to... Some just want to forget it...So, I respect that also.

Anyway, that bit of history I watched has stuck for the past few days and to every person who has served and to the families of dead heros, you have every reason to be very proud, today and every day...

Nice Post Joy...
