Hussars�?Kisses (Hungary) makes about 3 ½ dozen cookies Huszarcsok These cookies were supposedly named after the Hungarian light calvary of the 15th century (Hussars) whose kisses were wonderfully sweet and disappeared quickly, like the fast-riding soldiers. 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour | ¾ cup sugar | ¾ cup finely ground hazelnuts | 1 egg | 1 teaspoon baking powder | 1 teaspoon vanilla extract | 1/8 teaspoon salt | 1 ½ cups finely chopped hazelnuts | ¾ cup butter, softened | about ½ cup seedless raspberry jam or 40 maraschino cherry halves | - In a medium bowl, combine flour, ground nuts, baking powder and salt. Set aside. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Stir in flour mixture, ½ cup at a time, blending well after each addition. Cover and refrigerate 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375F. Grease 2 to 3 large baking sheets. Place chopped nuts in a medium bowl. With lightly floured hands, roll teaspoons of the dough into 1-inch balls. Roll balls in chopped nuts. Arrange, 1 inch apart, on baking sheets. Using your little finger, make an indentation about ½-inch deep in the center of each ball. Fill with jam or cherry half.
- Bake cookies 10 to 14 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool on racks. Store in an airtight container at room temp. for 5 days. They can be frozen.
