With all the hub-bub going on in PA about a school mandating the teaching of Intelligent Design over Evolution, what do you think?

Do you believe in Evolution or Intelligent Design, or Creationism or other theory?

What do you think should be taught in the schools ?

Intelligent Design is faith  based so i would say no.  its the job of schools to teach science and the job of parents to teach faith.

Well first I would look at the 3 big "theorists" - A creationist rejects the theory of evolution and believes instead that the each species on earth was put here by a divine being.  Creationist may accept "micro-evolution" (changes in the form of a species over time based on natural selection), but they reject the notion that one species can, over time, become another species.  The intelligent design rejects the theory of evolution and the notion that natural law and chance alone can explain the diversity of life on our earth, they argue that the diversity of life is the result of a purposeful scheme from some higher power (who may or may not be the biblical God).  Hmmmm - could they just be another, more politically correct version of creationist?  And then there is the evolutionist, who accepts Darwins argument that natural selection and environmental factors combine to explain the diversity of life we see on earth.  Of course even the evolutionist are divided into the Punctualists, who believe that evolution usually occurs sporadically, in relatively short bursts, as the result of major environmental change and the Gradualists who are more inclined to believe that evolution occurs more evenly, over longer periods of time.  Interesting enough, the Punctualists seem to now be winning their argument.  For me personally, I find it quite improbable that such order and diversity came out of chaos. God to me is a mystery, but is the explanation for the miracle of existence, why there is something instead of nothing.  As I look at all the evidence regarding our universe, the thought constantly pops into my head that something supernatural must be involved. Was it God who stepped in and so successfully crafted the cosmos for our benefit?  Hmmmm, that I am not sure of, but I wonder, could it be that suddenly, without intending to, science has stumbled upon scientific proof of the existence of a supreme being?  For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream... He has climbed the mountains of ignorance and just as he is about to conquer the highest peak, he pulls himself over the final rock, and he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries.  So it seems to me that when confronted with the marvels of life, the universe and everything, the question isnt just how? its also why?.  For me the only possible answers are religious...for me, I find a need for God in the universe and in my own life.

Just my humble opinion.....

Oh and the second part to your question - when I was in college, my anatomy & physiology professor taught both.  He was definetly a creationist, did not believe in the evolutionary theory at all, but he taught both sides, and he did so fairly....the weird thing was, I found that the ones in the class that were all for the theory of evolution got really pissed that he had the "nerve" to teach creationism in class.  I say they should give both sides, and between what the kids learn in class and what they learn from their parents, they will make their own decision in what they believe.

I am with Gena AGAIN argh. Teach both and let the children make up their minds for themselves with all the information they are given. Teaching neither doesn't work for me though cause well, that's what they do teach! lol If we let them get away with teaching nothing our kids will be even dumber than we are!!

I know for a fact that my kids are dumber than I am... They just think they are smarter than I am!!! Giggles

I believe that they should teach the scientific side of it with the open mindedness of it being wrong... Make the kids think and seek out the answers... The parents should teach the kids what the truth is... I am a strong believer in God and all that implies!!!

I for one am thankful that I have had enough education to respond to this question and know the difference between the two issues.   And that, is why I would say, the job of a school is to teach, not to decide one or the other, but to teach what there is to learn.  Teach evolution, but also teach the counterpoint of evolution, intelligent design or creationism.  That way in the future, our children and grandchildren will also be able to respond intelligently to this question.  Ignorance is not an option.
