NEW ORLEANS -- The superintendent of the New Orleans police department has announced that he's resigning from that post.

Eddie Compass isn't giving any reason for the decision.

The announcement comes on the same day it was revealed that nearly 250 New Orleans police officers -- roughly 15 percent of the force -- could face a special tribunal because they left their posts without permission during Hurricane Katrina and the storm's chaotic aftermath.

Compass is organizing a tribunal of four assistant chiefs to hear each case. The plan is to differentiate deserters from those with a legitimate reason for not showing up

The president of the union that represents the rank-and-file officers has said true deserters should be fired. He told The Times-Picayune newspaper that those who left because of cowardice don't need to be on the staff, and he said that's a small fraction of the group.

Officials said some of those 249 officers lost their homes, some were looking for family, and some just couldn't deal with the catastrophe.

As far as I'm concerned this is proff beyond any reasonable doubt that the police and the government on all levels can not protect you all the time and is the reason the forefathers saw it fit to write the second amendment... they were correct then and it is correct now.... these police officers should loose their law enforcement cert's perod...they are sworn to protect and serve... not serve when it is in their best interest or its not to dangerous or serve when their family is safe first....they are payed by tax payers...it costs over a million dollars to feild a police office if you include their retirement... soooo they are payed for their entire life.....Fire them all!

MagicGiz...
you're crackin' me UP!!
whewwww...that was tooo funny...
fire em' all...
errmmmm SURELY you mean the corrupt officiers...right...
not just all and sundry!?!?!?!?
the NOPD have been some of THE biggest cops on the take...for
FAR too long..and now...all of tha dirty laundry is gonna come out...
already startin' too....stories of how they robbed hotels...folks houses...etc
instead of helpin' to evacuate afterwards.....how they took buses meant to
evacuate people..and used em to loot....
hmmm the NOPD are dirtier than LAPD & NYPD put together...
and yet...no one cared...cuz it..
a) didn't affect tourism too bad...ie not enough for peeps to stop comin' for Mardi Gras
b) the kick back for the higher ups...was too good to pass
c) them are some bad a** buggahs in NO...and if they weren't gonna truly clean
house...<instead of bein' on the take> then no need to start cleanin' house
Yes...we have the right to bear arms...but there STILL has to be some law & order
ermmm and until the governor of LA resigns...and the mayor...tis all for naught...they should be held accountable....as well
my 2 cents...
and thanks for the giggle

wow giz

we are 100 % on this one.  thank god,  now that hell has frozen over maybe it will cool down here.  lol
i love the part that they may keep the ones who were just overwelmed and couldn't cope.  ummm seems to me those are the ones that should have been weeded out before they get a gun and  badge.

BB those stories are coming out.  maybe now some one can take control of the city from the mayor's office on down and clean it all up.

Jayyr,

the storys of corruption in N.O. have been around for quite some time... in fact the justice dept almost went in and took control a few years back...Brown beauty, i ment all officers that did not show up for duty should be fired they take an oath to protect and serve.. period! We need to hold people accountable for their actions or the lack there of...and yes this means Madam Governor and the Mayor as well all the way up to the President and FEMA....There was a total break downhere and this should never happen again....Jayyrr, It is a basic human right to defend ones self and like it or not guns just provide a means to do just that...The fore fathers saw this and were prepaired to provide us with the ability to protect ones life and home and country when the establishment fails... Guess what? The establishment failed! They were correct then and are still correct today...

giz,

we were not going home to home and taking ppl's guns here.  we were taking them off the street.  or if a homeowner made a comment we went and got the gun.   that pretty much what we do all the time most places anyway.
and once marshal law was declared we had the right to do so.  yes we have a right to own guns,  but we also have to follow the laws in doing so.
