After 32 years of dealing with the military health care system, it is nice to know someone finally screamed loud enough for someone to do something.
I am convinced that if the news media hadn't plastered those pictures of the conditions at Walter Reed, no one would be paying any attention to the issue.
Our VA system is over taxed as it is. Every VA clinic or hospital that I have dealt with is so substandard that it may as well be in the dark ages. The one in Biloxi is part of a civil war post. To tell you how old these buildings are.... the new addition to the hospital was dedicated by Ronald Reagan. And thats a fairly new one.
There is supposed to be a new VA hospital going in Tallahassee, but this state has so many veterans that it would take 3 more hospitals to serve them all.
Those that have served our country deserve better.

I am

They are going to put a new one in Orlando too di,  the one in tampa is ok but over crouded.  the one i go to here is only a few years old but its an all day thing to see someone.

My way to fix it?  Easy.  If the VA hospital is over its limit then you should be able to use any doctor or hospital within 50 miles of your home.

we also need to have better rules on who can use the VA.  if you were hurt while in the service you should go to the front of the line.
many don't know it but the VA hospital will see anyone who has ever been in the service,  even if whats wrong with them has nothing to do with the time they served.

LOL.. I hate when I'm interupted by work. My delete above.

The VA system in general sucks Jerald. It took me 5 long years to get my disability raised from 10% to 40%. I went through 8 different boards before it went to DC. Most would have given up. Fortunately I had someone give me some wize advice to use a DAV advocate. I sent her a dozen roses when we finally won.
I agree with you about outsourcing care. A few years ago, I was able to get my glasses though a local doc, covered by the VA. Now I have to go all the way to Pensacola to get them. And for my thyroid problems, I have to go to Biloxi.
You are also right that those that have a disability rating should get priority. But we also have another huge problem with homeless vets that can't get care anywhere else.
All in all, it needs a major fix, and it needs it now before all these kids get out of the service and hit the VA.

my point is di the VA should be for those who were hurt in the service.  I know there are homeless vets out there,  there are a lot of homeless peiod.
But untill we fix medicade for the homeless the VA will have to keep taking them.  A lot of homeless can also get SSI and care through them.

we do need to outsourse any care more than 50 miles from any VA hospital.  it will ensure better care all around.

any vet can  recive care at a VA hospital if they can't get it somewhere else.  And thats a big part of this problem.  A lot can get care under other programs and the VA doesn't double check to find this out in most cases.
When the medicade cuts kicked in a lot of new vets came to the VA.  it looks like a cost savings on paper but in fact it cost more for the VA to pick up the tab as medicade has contracts that do save them money with HMO's.
So to really fix this problem we have to fix the other ones  first.
