i am a big beliver in new people learning how to speak english.   but.............
that does take time,  and for some it will always be hard to speak or hard for us to under stand.   if a business wants to turn someone away it is their right.   but most would rather have the money.

I reject the idea of making any sort of Federal law to require public school teachers to instruct, or to present political campaigns in non-English languages. if special interests groups representing  segments of American society want to raise money, and at their own expense, campaign for a ceretain politician running for office, I would defend their right to do so.   As for levying yet another tax burden on the american taxpayer-this one to help pay for  a fellow citizens right to his ignorance of what our Congress are timid to declare our national language, forget it machachos.    PoPPoP

If I went to live in Mexico, you better believe no stores would cater to my need to speak english. They would say quit crying and get a tutor. As part of the visa and citizenship requirements all immigrants are supposed to learn how to read, write and speak our language. But there are some 12 million immigrants who made the conscious decision to sneak into our country and by-pass the need to learn anything about our language or customs!

As a nurse, in home health, I frequently have patients that cannot speak English, or speak broken English.  I have learned to adapt by printing teaching materials in their language (be it german, spanish, french..whatever) and then printing it in English so I can teach them. I dont mind adapting to meet their needs, and I know many have told me that the reason they never learned the English language is because they want to maintain their heritage, that coming here was a move made for their family, but that they should not have to conform to our ways to live here.  Think about it, we aren't even the "melting pot" anymore, we are the salad bowl, or the "mosiac".  Its just a fact of life we all have to live with.   What is it they say "don't sweat the small stuff" and guess what, pressing 1 is a very small thing.

Sorry, I have a very simple stand on this problem and it is a BIG problem.....You come to this country to take advantage of a better life, learn to speak English or stay where you are coming from!!!!
This country has become one of "political correctness" so we don;t offend those from other countries........Sorry, this is the U.S.A. and we speak English here!!!!
Here in Florida, and I am sure elsewhere in the country, you can go to the Driver's License offices and take the test in English or Spanish, what's up with that? In some fast food places you can't even get a job behind the counter unless you speak Spanish as well as English......Press 1 may not be a problem for some, but that is just one of many things that we have to put up with because we are so politically correct.....
I will say it again, you want to come here and live, work, take advantage of all the U.S.A. has to offer, then learn to speak English dammit, or don't bother coming here!

I am in Canada and the same thing happens except that your choice is English or French. The only french speaking province is Quebec and about 35% of that province speaks english, but it is against the law to have english store signs posted, and they refuse to teach english in the french schools. The rest of the provinces are forced to learn french in school and have to deal with the language choices when talking to most government and buisineses.I believe that to live in an English speaking country, that all citizens need to learn the language of the majority.
Just My 2 3/4 cents (canadian).

well, I am English born and raised till I moved here when I was 13 Years old. I geuss I would have to move back to England........ American English is very different. Both grammer and spelling. The English, British, language grammer is Latin based. Spelling has many French infuences. such as..... colour. and  its  "re" instead of er, centre....... plus so many words mean different things. It was comman the learn French and or Spanish because they were so close.
But, I do think things are going a little overboard. For example you do have to take the citizen test  english and prove you understand it. I think it comes down to the definition of illegal immigrant vs immigrant

I am blessed with the opportunity to travel internationally quite often.  There is a joke that is almost known in every country of the world.  It goes something like this....

Q. What do you call someone that speaks 3 languages?
A.  Tri-lingual

Q.  What do you call someone that speaks 2 languages?
A.  Bi-Lingual

Q.  What do you call someone that only speaks 1 language?
A.  American

The reason for this is that while in most countries around the world English as a second language is mandatory in schools and most well educated people in these countries do speak English, very few Americans traveling to other countries will bother to learn that country's language.
Yes, I agree, here at home we should expect people that want to live here to speak our official language. But, before we start pointing the finger at others, we need to start respecting other cultures and languages around the world.  There is a reason why we are known throughout the world as the "Ugly Americans"!

Oh and by the way, my parents were both from other countries and both learned to speak English, and made sure their children spoke English and Spanish and respected both cultures, not just their own.

You obviously misunderstood what I said...

"Yes, I agree, here at home we should expect people that want to live here to speak our official language. "

We are arrogant enough to think that we don't need to learn someone else's language when we're in their country....temporarily or permanently in some cases, but we complain when they don't learn ours.

Unfortunity Americans are one of the few counties in the world that only speak one language...English has become the language of the buisiness world ...for example if a German and a Chinaman are doing buisiness...They speak English!!  I don't have a issue with Bi lingual signs or people learning other languages in the States...That would be a good thing..What I have a Issue with is teaching ebonics!!!  That is not a language...there is no country that speaks ebonics...Its a slang language that caters to criminal elemants and the ignorant!!!

I agree teaching Ebonics is teaching that we're too lazy to learn the correct way to speak.

(Where in the USA does anyone speak correctly anyway?)

I think if the store owner doesn't want to take orders from someone who doesn't speak english then the store down the road will.  Just as if i visit some other country and they don't understand me a different store will get my money and i will still get to eat.   If you want to turn away someone who doesn't speak as you do then its money someone else will make.  You choice but in this day and age its kinda silly.
BUT.........

If you are going to live here you should know how to speak and write english.  hard to be a melting pot if no one understands each other.  funny how the very countries that comdem us for wanting english to be spoken have the harshest laws when it comes to what they speak.

In a perfect world we would all speak "genabonics."  lol.. ok seriously.. not cause I dont even know what that would be.. My son told me just the other day that airline pilots are required to speak English.. It doesnt matter what country that you are from.. Yet we are not required to speak German or Chinese {which I applaud anyone who can speak Chinese}  I just thought that this was a bit interesting....

i must say that we are way to PC in america these days. used to be if you offended someone they would tell you , now the aclu comes for your head. your a biggot or a xenophobe or a racist because you say that people that entered this country illegally are "illegal aliens" or "illegal immegrants". what the hell do the PC folks call them if they came here UNLAWFULLY??? if you go to the task of coming here the right way then god bless you and welcome to america i hope you have a great life here, however the people that sneak in, regaurdless of what the PC folks would say are a huge burden on our entire nation...housing, jobs, social services, SSI, and maybe most importantly the crime rate!
if you come to this country speak english!! if i go to live in another country i will most deffinately learn as much about that culture in every way possible before i show up in thier land looking like a kook. while i agree that american only speak one language for the most part i must submit that if america was really all that bad why do all these people keep showing up for a chunk of U.S.A. funk?
in closing i say this, IF YOU DONT LIKE IT HERE GO BACK WHERE YOU CAME FROM, OTHERWISE SHUT UP AND HAVE A NICE DAY!!!
