The wagon ride seemed to be taking forever. The dirt roads taken were very bumpy and uncomfortable. But this wasn’t the first time she had ridden in a slave wagon; probably why she was the calmest of all the people sitting around her. So many of them looked either completely defeated or were growling and still cursing even after having been sitting here for hours. Cecona certainly didn’t feel as rebellious and so driven to be free again as some of those people, but she could relate to the ones who look defeated; having the feeling of losing everything and never being able to get them back. She thought about her old mate; her only mate, Shade, and the daughter they had together. They were both taken from her and even after so long she hadn’t been able to find them.

The Wagon came to a halt and her ears perked. They must have arrived at either the slave market or another check point. All the others in the wagon seemed to stop and listen as there were some muffled words exchanged before the wagon started moving again, but this trip was short and the wagon stopped again. This time the driver and some of the market workers walked to the back of the wagon and started showing the slaves off one at a time. They were put into rooms by category of age and race. She was led into a room of nekos ranging from ages 14-18 and chained down. Her ears drooped down and she sighed softly, fidgeting lightly with her dress as she looked around the room at the other nekos.

Shade woke with a start, his nightmares getting increasingly vivid. He looked around and realized he had actually gotten a few hours of sleep. Normally he was woken by his own screams. He never remembered his nightmares only knew that they always left him wanting to search for someone. For who, he didn’t know.

He looked around and realized he was still in the quarantine section of the auction house. He had been there for the last two weeks since his recapture on the side of the road between his former master’s estates and the main city. He couldn’t remember why but he thought going to the city was better than running, he had to find someone. Today was the day he was supposed to be moved to the general population with the rest of the neko slaves his age.

He watched disinterested as the guards came for him, dressed him in undyed cloth and put a cursed bell on his collar to add to his apparent cuteness. The guards pulled him up and practically carried him to the correct room for his age. He was dumped unceremoniously on the ground and the door was slammed shut after the guards left.

Sitting up he looked around the crawled to the wall to wait until the next auction where he was to go up.

Cecona’s ears twitched a little, hearing the soft sound of a bell coming closer to the room. She remembered how both she and Shade had bells when bought by Concord, though he crushed them because he hated the sound of bells. That little memory of her old mate made her smile, but saddened her as well. She still missed him and wanted to find him, but so much time had passed. He could be with another Master, or free, or even?/FONT>

Her thoughts were interrupted by the door opening and the neko with the bell being thrown into the room. She looked and then looked away, not exactly interested in who it was; at least she thought at first. Her eyes widened and she had to look back to see if she really saw what she saw. She couldn’t believe her eyes. It must be a mistake. But it couldn’t have been, he looked exactly the same. Maybe a bit more beaten up then she remembered, but it was him! She watched him as he looked around before crawling to the wall. She was sure he looked at her, and she tensed when he did, thinking that he wouldn’t be able to believe it was her. But he just went to the wall, acting as if he didn’t see her or didn’t know who she was.

It couldn’t have been Shade then, her mate would not ignore her like this. But that neko looked exactly like Shade, the same face, the same build, the same paws and even same fur. It had to be him. Slowly, she got onto her hands and knees and crawled closer, still keeping her chains loose. Her ears drooped down, and she leaned a little more towards him when she was a few feet away. The first thing to try was to see if it really was him or not. “Sh…Shade??/FONT>

He turned towards the soft voice and saw the blue haired neko. She had such a strange look on her face and he couldn’t understand it. “How d’you know my name??His once soft, deep voice was now very harsh, almost scary.
He looked her up and down, his eyes filled with unknown shadows. Recognition should have shown behind his once golden eyes, now there was only annoyance. He shook his head as though to throw something off, his ragged blue-black hair swaying messily. The sudden movement caused the hated bell to chime and he reached up automatically to hold it, attempting to keep it from sounding its melodic tones. As his fingers closed around it a jolt of pain traveled down his spine.
His back arched in reflex and he bit his lip to keep from crying out. His sharp teeth tore a small hole in the flesh of his lip but he ignored it as the pain from the bell subsided. His hands dropped back to his lap and he watched the small neko through narrowed lids. “Well, who are you??

Cecona’s eyes looked upon Shade hopefully, expecting him to look into her loving eyes and remember her. But he didn’t. He just glared at her like she was an annoyance, probably not even worth his time. He didn’t remember her, his gaze and his response was enough to know that. Her ears drooped down and she backed up from the harshness of his voice. It was as if they had never been in love. Like she was just the annoying little maid she was when they first met.

“You don’t remember me??she asked in a quiet voice, feeling embarrassed that this may not even be the same neko, but saddened because she knew it was but he did not even remember her. Maybe the incident, still even unknown to her, that separated everyone had caused Shade to lose his memory. She had lost her memory once when their master was in a fit of rage and hit her.

Her ears perked at the sound of the bell and saw her mate flex in pain and her ear drooped down. It seemed almost instinctual; seeing his pain she moved forward, getting as close as she could to him. She started to purr soothingly as her delicate hands slowly untied the bell from around his neck. “You always hated bells, probably almost as much as Concord did, if not more.?She threw the bell aside, it chiming as it bounced on the floor once before rolling to a stop.

In her mind and her eyes she was begging for him to remember her, to know who she was and what they had been through. But she couldn’t force him to remember his past. There may be a very good reason he had forgotten. But the fact that he didn’t remember her or the daughter they had together hurt her heart too much. “You really have forgotten everything, didn’t you? You’ve forgotten me, our old home, our master, the other slaves…did you even forget Ryanna??/FONT>

Shade continued to glare at this kit claiming to know him. “Look child, you seem sweet. Hide that or your new master will take advantage and hurt you.?He gave her another inspection and then closed his eyes to lean back. With his eyes closed he could still see the girl’s face, she was smiling, her eyes bright.
So distracted by trying to get her image out of his head, that he didn’t sense her moving closer to untie the bell around his neck. Her hands barely brushed the spelled bell and another jolt of pain shot through him.
Out of reflex he pushed her away just as she tossed the bell away. She spoke and as he listened, he tensed hearing the name ‘Concord? He shook his head again, clearing the unpleasant emotions that arose.
He opened his eyes and watched her, bewildered by her questions. “Look little one,?he paused not knowing why he used that pet name, though it was what he used to call her, “I don’t know who you are or what you’re talking about, so please leave me be. I want to get some rest before the next auction.?BR>He turned away and lowered his lids, hoping to convince her that he was actually going to sleep, though he knew he would not, not with nightmares becoming so dramatic.

Cecona mewed and was utterly surprised when the confused shade pushed her away. When he opened his eyes to look at her, her expression changed completely, no longer did she look happy or hopeful like she did a moment ago. She looked saddened, completely depressed that he had pushed her away and didn’t remember her, not even after she mentioned some very important things from their past. He didn’t even seem fazed when she mentioned the name of their Daughter.

Even though he called her by her old pet name, that still didn’t seem to consul her. “Shade, how can you treat me like this? Even if you have forgotten me…how can you push me away? Ever since the day we were separated I’ve been trying so hard to find you and be with you again...even as the months passed I still had hope I would find you. And now I finally have found you, but you can’t remember anything about me, and you push me away! Me, you’re mate!

She watches as he turned away from her, telling her to leave him alone so he could rest. Her ears folded back and she debated going back to where she was before, but she decided against it and moved to curl up against Shade, closing her eyes as she wanted to rest as well. “I won’t leave, never again will you be taken from me.?/FONT>

He carried on the appearance of sleep as she spoke, curling up beside him. After a little while, appearance became reality as he drifted into sleep. His dreams at first were fine but then it morphed into a dark scene.
Faces he should recognize, but didn’t were all around him, accusing him of betrayal and abandonment. The face of the young neko girl lying next to him appeared most in the forefront. She was weeping uncontrollably holding a kit in her arms.
The scene shifted again. Now he saw himself muzzled and strapped to a plow next to some other unknown male. He struggled against the reins attached to his muzzle. He glanced over at a small female neko, the same one now claiming to know him, and let out a soft moan, overwhelmed by the need to touch and hold her and the kit in her arms.
Another shift. A large man barreled towards him ripping him from the embrace of the girl and carried him bodily to a small wooden box. He was thrown in and the top was nailed shut sealing him into the smothering box, despite is claustrophobia. He kicked and screamed, tore at the lid of the box with his claws, until his fingers bled, scratched at his face to remove the muzzle, scarring his once cute facial feature.
His mind slowly climbed from the dream world, as his body kicked and screamed with the events in the dream. He woke screaming name, but when he reached full consciousness he couldn’t remember it, though it had been the name of his mate.

Cecona had gone to sleep quickly, feeling at peace to be with her mate again, even if he did not remember her. She refused to leave him, never again would she have someone she truly loves taken away from her again. Though Cecona had become a very light sleeper over the months, waking up to any sound or movement she could sense. As soon as she felt Shade begin to move around her eyes shot open as she looked to see what was wrong. He looked to be having a nightmare. Her soft, lightly shaking hands moved to cup his face. She whispered and tried to soothe him with her purring and some reassuring words to help him wake up. Then he said something that shocked her, something that made her heart flutter and her chest tighten. He said her name as he woke up. She stared at him, somewhat in disbelief as he came to full consciousness. “Shade…Shade you said my name! You do remember me!"

He pushed her away lightly. “Get off me girl. I said nothing.?Standing he turned away from her , only to realize all the other slaves in the cell were staring at him as though he had two heads.
He shook his head again clearing the nightmare images from his head. The rest of the night he paced restlessly. Having been in the cages for the last two weeks he had memorized the auction schedule. Hearing the temple bells nearby, he knew soon the guards would come and pick a dozen or so nekos to parade before the gathered assembly. He prayed to whatever deity was listening that the annoying female would not be stay/going with him.
Going back to his place at the wall and squatted, waiting to hear the heavy footsteps of the guards. Hearing this, his ears flicked up then dropped back down as he glanced sidelong at the female once again. He shook his head slightly, though in the back of his mind recognition was there for roughly a second.
The doors opened and two heavy-handed guards stepped in. One began pointing out different nekos, while the other shackled the chosen to a long chain to bring them to the auction block. Shade was picked so he rose slowly, remaining as calm as possible so to not bring the guards wrath down upon him. Now was not the time for escape, though he had to be free of all this, to find something…someone.
They chose the girl next and he winced, before following the guards from the room to the auction room.
