May or may not be of interest to some of you, but I'm organising the New Zealand Western Martial Arts Convention which will be held in Upper Hutt February 22 - 25.

The keynote presenter will be Bob Charron from the St. Martin Academy in Wisconsin USA. He is the world expert in the 15th century Italian Master at Arms Fiore dei Liberi who was the fencing instructor of Sir Nicolò III d'Este, Marquis of Ferrara, Modena and Parma. For those that know their medieval history this was the court of the early 15th century where anybody who was some body went. It was the most enlightened court in Europe at the time. Fiore dei Liberi was the Master at Arms at this court. His reputation was such that in his home town of Fruili in Cividale there is still a road named after him (and on this road today there is a vineyard which sells Fiore dei Liberi wine).

In 1409 he wrote a book called Flower of Battles (Fiori d'Battalgia or Flos Duellotorum) of which three student copies are known (the Pisani Dossi, Morgan-Pierpoint and the Getty-Ludwig). The original and two other student copies are currently unknown (one hopes still surviving).

It is rivetting stuff. Fiore blended martial brilliance with high medieval learning. Those that think the medieval man was some ignorant buffoon incapable of holding rational thought will be stunned at how wrong they are.

Anyway, without further ado:

We went to the Riccarton Markets last Sunday and there is a new stall there with swords and armory.  There was some really cool helmets and things though I couldn't comment on the quality obviously - to the untrained eye they looked awesome.  There was a full body suit as well which kept the male folk entranced long enough to ensure I could look at several other stalls I usually get dragged passed.

That must be them SOP.  I wouldn't mind a full suit in my house if I could just find somewhere to stand it.  But not the swords.  It's not me or mine I worry about running amok - its the teenage boys telling other teenage boys what they saw where and the consequence of being robbed that stops me letting them hang around.

It had the opposite effect on where I lived in Auckland

One night three teenage boys made the mistake of dumping shopping trolleys on drive way while I was unloading a bunch of (medieval) weapons. While not directly threatening them, I told them to take their trolleys back (this was at night). They did so with an incredibly sheepish/submissive looks on their faces. For the next three years not even petty vandalism occurred near my block. No shopping trolleys dumped, no tagging. Once there was an attempted burglary on my next door neighbour but the would-be thieves only broke the window. They never entered the premises. I suspect the window breakage caused too much noise...it's a bit of pity I'm such a deep sleeper otherwise my crossbow would have seen some action that night .

It had to end unfortunately. I guess my infamy had run its course. Shopping trolleys and tagging started again. I spent a few nights trying to hunt down the culprits by patrolling by myself, but I never did catch them  I did have the pleasure of breaking up an out of control teenage party last year though, but it didn't involve any of my weapons (outside my fists). That stopped the petty crime
