I can't praise those unpaid volunteers enough!
I was one of the first on the scene of a nasty crash an hour ago. The vehicle had hit a power pole, the driver was badly injured and the ute was on fire.
With my extinguisher and another from another first-aider we kept the fire down, but could not extinguish it.
The driver was trapped and there was no way we could get her out.
It was a real relief to see that fire crew arrive, just as the engine was starting to flare up, as we were near out of options!

Good for you too Os - your initial action gave valuable time until the Fire Service arrived |

Toyota.
~100k impact vs concrete power pole.
I hope she makes it. I think she is meant to- two ex-ambos on scene, enough fire-fighting gear to buy us the tiem we needed and a contracting crew right there, to make the scene as safe as could be. |

I'm with Ali Os. If you hadn't been there to contain it initially she wouldn't have had a show. You should be proud you saved a life today!!! |

Very nasty! |

I had to call the same local Fire Brigade out this afternoon. There was a fire burning in dry vegetation in Abbot's Creek right next to the railway bridge when I crossed it with a train. As there is no natural source of ignition, it would have to have been arson. It just shows the idiots around when you consider how tinder-dry the countryside in Wairarapa is at the moment. The “silly-season?is well and truely underway! And in Masterton this morning, a Tranzit Coachlines bus in Metlink livery running one of the Masterton town routes stopped at Renall Street level crossing (where the level crossing alarms were operating), then drove off over the tracks in front of the train I was hauling (also with a Metlink livery). The train wasn't stopping at the adjacent Renall Street Station, so was approaching the crossing at speed. I can just imagine the newspaper headlines if it had been a hit - “Metlink train crashes into Metlink bus!?Ontrack's Network Control Manager was not very impressed when Train Control logged the incident, and the result is that the “shit has now hit the fan?and both the Police and Land Transport NZ are investigating. |

It was not a Toyota, it was a Mitsi.
I found the badge amongst the remains of the fence when I went back to have a look at the scene.
The local paper is doing a story on it. After got the 'please explain' for using my ute's extingisher, the boss got onto the local paper... |
