I made my Christmas Cake last week and now the one I've made for our work BBQ in the oven now. The smell of brandy is quite strong - the fruit is very pissed!

Did anyone else loose the internet last night?

There was a big failure in MDR which took out the power for the data centre. Phil just happened to be at work at the time getting something when all hell broke loose, or rather froze. When he rang me he had no idea that Xtra was down as well because Telecoms internal systems were down. So much so that the external lines and cell phones were all they had.

It was a late night and he is back at work now.

No, I have had no problems with connections since I left Telecom/Xtra, with the exception of a 20 ton digger chopping through the cable down the road.  It took a couple of days to find and fix - but thats because it was telecom that had to fix he cable and they apparantly dont work in the weekends.

All I can say in telecoms favour, is they provide the bottom benchmark to gauge other providers by!

I gather that quite alot ended up getting a power spike when several big breakers blew on a UPS. Phil went in this morning to direct the day shift on the call centre he works with to go down the road as they had no way of switching the calls from the 24hr desk that handles them on the dog watch, they had a hard time getting the calls to go there instead of a black hole last night. He couldn't phone the staff because he couldn't access the system with the contact details or the roster!
Apparently 1900 servers were off line and some of them didn't come back when they got the power rerouted.

I dare say that surfing the net may not be a very green activity for a few weeks, Telecom will be burning alot of diesel.

2 of mine hadn't topped up their mobiles this month and last night they were texting for nothing.  Must have been because of the problem.   I told them that when they top up on Monday they are going to owe telecom $x for the texts.  They didn't like that idea lol.

lol, it looks like the damage wasn't as bad as they feared last night and just about everything is back to normal.

I am wondering if Phil will get any extra reward for spending 19 hours at work on the weekend.

As I've learnt, the only reward you get for working extra hours is..... more work!

Well there was a bit of a change of plan.  Kirk and Luke went to Brisbane last week and I go over on saturday so tomorrow is my last day at home.  Shit still so much to do!!!  We will go straight to Broome hopefully getting there by xmas with Gareth. We will stay there for a few months fitting the bus out.  That will get us over the Rainy season and then we can meander back to Brisbane via Savannah way in nice dry weather. So, I'll try to pop into the bar and update every so often and post a few pics or I'm on facebook under [email protected] .  Take care all.
