Moon Names and Meanings

Of what is now the Northern and Eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the Moon names, but in general the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names. Since the lunar month is only 29 days long on the average, the full Moon dates shift from year to year.

Here is a listing of the full Moon names:

Full Wolf Moon: Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages. Thus, the name for January's full Moon. Sometimes it was also referred to as the Old Moon, or the Moon After Yule. Some called it the Full Snow Moon, but most tribes applied that name to the next Moon.

Full Snow Moon: Since the heaviest snow usually falls during this month, native tribes of the north and east most often called February's full Moon the Full Snow Moon. Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult.

Full Worm Moon: As the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this Moon as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter; or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night.

The Full Sap Moon: Marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. To the settlers, it was also known as the Lenten Moon, and was considered to be the last full Moon of winter.

Full Pink Moon: This name came from the herb moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names for this month's celestial body include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and among coastal tribes the Full Fish Moon, because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn.

Full Flower Moon: In most areas, flowers are abundant everywhere during this time. Thus, the name of this Moon. Other names include the Full Corn Planting Moon, or the Milk Moon.

Full Strawberry Moon: This name was universal to every Algonquin tribe. However, in Europe they called it the Rose Moon.

Full Buck Moon: July is normally the month when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, for the reason that thunderstorms are most frequent during this time. Another name for this month's Moon was the Full Hay Moon.

Full Sturgeon Moon: The fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

Full Fruit or Barley Moon: The names Fruit and Barley were reserved only for those years when the Harvest Moon is very late in September...

Full Harvest Moon: This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. In two years out of three, the Harvest Moon comes in September, but in some years it occurs in October. At the peak of harvest, farmers can work late into the night by the light of this Moon. Usually the full Moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the Moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U.S., and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe. Corn, pumpkins, squash, beans, and wild rice the chief Indian staples are now ready for gathering.

Full Hunter's Moon: With the leaves falling and the deer fattened, it is time to hunt. Since the fields have been reaped, hunters can easily see fox and the animals which have come out to glean.

Full Beaver Moon: This was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Full Beaver Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter. It is sometimes also referred to as the Frosty Moon.

Full Cold Moon: The Full Long Nights Moon, During this month the winter cold fastens its grip, and nights are at their longest and darkest. It is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule. The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long, and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low Sun.

~Moon Energies~

Whether doing a full moon esbat, a dark moon meditation, or a spell casting, one should know and understand the moon's influences in each of its particular phases.

Working with the moon's energies instead of against them only helps to ensure the best results for your efforts.

However, emergencies often arise that can't be postponed until the proper moon cycle. The question then becomes how to work with the current moon's energy to bring about that which we need to have happen. The essence of the answer to this question lies in the basics of magick.

Essentially, all magick can be broken down into two types, drawing and banishing. During the waxing moon cycle, our work should be concentrated on drawing what we want towards us.

During the waning moon, our work should be pivoted primarily towards banishing that which we want out of our lives.

Therefore, if a sudden illness strikes during the time of the waxing moon, work to draw health rather than banish illness. If an emergency situation calls for a heavy prosperity spell during the time of the waning moon, work towards banishing poverty and need.

As you can see in these situations, the immediate need is accomplished by working with its opposite. In this way, you utilize the energies from the current moon cycle (either drawing or banishing) to ultimately realize your goal.

There are, of course, other lunar energies beyond simple waning and waxing moons. These include each of the phases of the moon within the cycle, as well as special moons, such as the Blue Moon or the Harvest Moon.

It's also a good idea to craft your working towards the correct astrological placement of the moon.

None of this is absolutely necessary. By sheer will and personal energy alone, especially if you live in constant awareness of the sacred in everything, you can set events in motion. I liken it to going through a locked door, though. You can ram the door enough times with your body that eventually it will open. However, opening the door is much simpler (and less harmful to the body) if you have a key. The lunar energies we work with are simply keys that we can use to craft our workings for the best assurance of success.

Listed below are the influences of the lunar cycles, as well as each of the moon phases, the "special moons," and the lunar/astrological correspondences. Use these to craft and time your workings for the best possible outcome.

~Moon Cycles~

Waxing Cycle; This cycle of the Moon refers to the period of time from the New Moon to the Full Moon. The energy from this cycle should be used in "drawing" that which you want towards you. It's a good time to begin new projects and expand any current efforts. It's also a time to craft workings that concern love, harmony, balance, and peace, as well as protection and healing.

Waxing Crescent; Light crescent on right side of Moon.

First Quarter; The right half of the Moon is lit (ninety degrees from sun, end of first quarter, beginning of second quarter).

Waxing Gibbous; Three-fourths of the Moon is now lit.

Waning Cycle; The waning cycle of the Moon is the period from the Full Moon to the New Moon. This is the cycle to use for banishing and rejecting baneful aspects, such as disease and negativity, as well as dissolving destructive energies of all types.

Full Moon; Moon and Sun in Opposition. The entire Moon is lit. I usually wait until three days following the Full Moon before working with the waning cycle.

Waning Crescent; Dark crescent on right side of Moon.

Third Quarter; The right half of the Moon is now dark (ninety degrees from sun, end of third quarter, beginning of fourth quarter).

Waning Gibbous; Three-fourths of the Moon is now dark.

New Moon; Sun and Moon in conjunction. The entire Moon appears dark.

~Special Moons~

The Full Moon; The Full Moon actually covers three days, including the night of the Full Moon, itself. This is a time for action, for harvesting the fruits of our labors, for realizing that which we began at the last cycle, and of giving thanks.

The Dark Moon; The Dark Moon is the three day period from the last sliver of moonlight to the first sliver of moon light. This is the time of introspection; of looking within and meditating on the shadow self.

Moon Void of Course; As the moon orbits the Earth, it passes in and out of the 12 signs of the zodiac. A void-of-course moon is the time period when the moon makes no major aspect with other planets before entering another sign. The duration of this period can be as little as a few seconds or it can be longer than a day. The Moon rules the emotions, so one can expect to experience feelings of "disconnectedness," as well as emotional upsets, turnarounds, and variability. Therefore, it's a good rule of thumb not to sign contracts, start rituals, cast spells, or begin anything that would require any degree of emotional commitment until the Moon is aspected once again.

Blue Moon; A Blue Moon is that wonderful occurence when the Full Moon shows us her face twice in one month. Also known as a Goal Moon, it's an excellent time to set new goals for yourself.

Eclipses; As Lunar Eclipses represent the perfect union of the Sun and Moon, any type of magick worked or energy sent out during this time will be amplified.

~Drawing Down the Moon~

In this ritual the Goddess becomes incarnate in the High Priestess. The High Priestess stands in front of the altar with her back to it. She holds the wand in her right hand and the scrounge in her left. She crosses her wrists and crosses the wand and scrounge above them while holding them close to her breast.

The High Priest stands in front of her and says:

"Diana, Queen of night In all your beauty bright,Shine on us here, And with your silver beam Unlock the gates of dream; Rise bright and clear. On Earth and Sky and Sea, Your magic mystery Its spell shall cast, Wherever leaf may grow, Wherever tide may flow, Till all be past. O secret queen of power, At this enchanted hour We ask your boon. May fortune's favor fall Upon true witches all, O Lady Moon!"..

The High Priest kneels before the High Priestess and gives her the Five Fold Kiss; that is, he kisses her on both feet, both knees, womb, both breasts, and the lips, starting with the right of each pair...

He says, as he does this:

"Blessed be thy feet, that have brought thee in these ways Blessed be thy knees, that shall kneel at the sacred altar Blessed be thy womb, without which we would not be Blessed be thy breasts, formed in beauty. Blessed be thy lips, that shall utter the Sacred Names."

For the kiss on the lips, they embrace, length to length, with their feet touching each others When he reaches the womb, she spreads her arms wide, and the same after the kiss on the lips.

The High Priest kneels again and invokes:

"I invoke thee and call upon thee, Mighty Mother of us all, bringer of all fruitfulness; by seed and root, by bud and stem, by leaf and flower and fruit, by life and love do I invoke thee to descend upon the body of this, thy servant and priestess."

During this invocation he touches her with his right forefinger on her right breast, left breast, and womb, repeats the set and finally the right breast.

Still kneeling, he spreads his arms out and down, with the palms forward and says:

"Hail Aradia! From the Amalthean Horn Pour forth thy store of love; I lowly bend Before thee, I adore thee to the end, With loving sacrifice thy shrine adore Thy foot is to my lip (he kisses her right foot) my prayer up borne Upon the rising incense smoke; then spend Thine ancient love, O Mighty One, descend To aid me, who without thee am forlorn."

The High Priest stands up and steps backwards.

The High Priestess draws the Invoking Pentagram of Earth in the air with the wand and says:

"Of the Mother darksome and divine Mine the scrounge, and mine the kiss; The five point star of love and bliss Here I charge you in this sign."

The High Priestess should be in a trance now This is a good time to do the Charge or the Witches' Creed When the Charge or Creed is finished, the Goddess must be dismissed.

It is bad magical practice not to do so The High Priest faces the Priestess and says:

"We thank you Our Lady for attending our rites We bid you farewell till next we call you.."

 "Blessed Be."

~Full Moon Blessing Invocation~

We stand in this circle, linked in the fullness of the Universe and call the cool light of Night to bless our Venture. Full in its glory we tap the power of the Glorious Orb. Drawing the Light of the Lamp of Night, and reveling in the wholeness with which we bless this.

 ~Waning Moon Blessing Invocation~

As we gather here, we summon the power of the Waning Moon, to carry away any energy that will keep potential from being reached. We ask that the disappearing Orb, lend us the power to clear and purify.

~Waxing Moon Blessing Invocation~

We reach before us, into new beginnings and seek to bring Energy and Growth to flourish here. As the Moon shows new-born in the sky, we wake the power within us to nurture this beginning. And call the waxing Moon's light, to ever more illuminate the purpose and beauty for which we consecrate this, it to best meet the need for which we now consecrate it.

~Full Moon Ritual~

It is best to try to perform this ritual at night where you can see the Full Moon.

You may want to have lunar symbols or quartz crystal present on and around your altar.

You should have your cauldron or a white bowl with fresh water as well.

Arrange your altar and worship space, light the candles and incense, and then cast your circle.

Say your invocations to the Goddess and the God and any other chants or prayers you might wish to say.

Look up at the Full Moon and let its energies flow through you and allow the Goddess to fill you with Her love and power.

Then say something similar to the following:

"Great Goddess of the Moon,
Lady of mysteries and wonders,
Sharing your sacred light,
O Loving Lady of the night,
Our Mother of wisdom,
I celebrate thy Lunar jewel,
As it grows to its peak of power,
With this ritual of honor,
O Lady of the Moon,
O Lady of the Moon,
O Lady of the Moon."

Visualize the Goddess as you see her and continue saying "O Lady of the Moon"  for as long as you feel need.

Then perform works of divination or magick or both as you feel is necessary.

The Full Moon is a powerful time for both.

Then perform the Simple Feast (crescent cakes and white wine are traditional but use what you feel is appropriate).

Give Thanks to the Spirits of the Elements, The Goddess, and The God.

Then release your circle.

Your ritual is completed.

~Full Moon Spell~

Take 9 pennies outside during the Full Moon and let her light shine upon you.

Open your arms as if to embrace the moon and make your request.

Say:
"You have said that when you're round
prayers are answered, chains unbound.
You promise that by light of you
all one's wishes will come true."

Toss the pennies in her direction and

Chant:
"Please take this token of my love,
as your silver light shines from above.
Please bring me what I ask of you,
by darkest night and morning dew."

"Full"

The Moon's energy is most intense when She reaches abundant fullness.

Any magical effort, especially difficult ones, can benefit greatly from the potency of this phase.

Use the Full Moon to amplify magical intent and to give spellworkings additional power..

To seal spells performed during the Full Moon, use this chant:

 Chant:

"Abundant Mother, Moon so bright Hear my plea upon this night Your fertile power lend this spell Make it potent, strong, and well."

Thank the moon and leave.

 ~Moon Scrying~

In ancient times scrying was closely connected with the Magic of the Moon.

The lunar sphere is the lowest of the spheres of the planets, and for this reason the Moon was regarded as a kind of gateway between our ordinary, physical world and the mysterious realm of spirits.

The Moon rules dreams, visions, hallucinations, fantasies, and memories "all funtions" of the astral plane, which exists one level removed from the physical plane.

The astral plane is not a place in space but another dimension of reality.

It exists and penetrates our ordinary physical world the way music can vibrate on the air at the same time a human voice is speaking, or white light can simultaneously hold many separate different colors.

The visions we perceive during scrying form upon the astral plane.

This is also true of the images of our dreams, but when we dream we usally make no conscious inspection of our astral landscape.

During scrying we remain consciously aware of what we see astrally, and are able to record our impressions.

Most of the substances used to aid scrying have historically been lunar materials.

These include Crystals, Mirrors, Water and other Liquids, Silver Rings, Lunar Herbs, and Hazel Wands.

It would be foolish to desregard this historical connection between the Moon and Scrying.

Wherever possible, lunar symbols and substances will be specified in this work, and lunar times observed.

The person scrying may choose to observe this lunar connection or disregard it.

The Moon can become a potent ally for the scryer and who understands and respects her changing rhythms.

The power of the Moon is well known to Witches who follow the teachings of the Craft.

To disregard the Moon in scrying is to willfully reject the most useful of all symbolic associations.
