I will use the example of the earth here, but you can easily adapt this exercise to many other things animals, other plants, the ground, rocks, the wind.
Find an outdoor spot where you are comfortable and where you will not be disturbed.
Calm yourself, breathe deeply, and practice your heartbeat meditation for a few minutes.
Try to become hyper-aware of the energy flows throughout your body.
When the moment feels right, become aware of the fact that all things have specific energy flows that can be sensed.
Think upon this for a few moments as you continue feeling your heartbeat and personal energies.
When you are ready, expand your awareness of energy flows into the area around your body, become aware of everything around you.
Know that everything has a unique set of energies.
Always keeping in tune with your own energy, slowly try to sense the everything's energy flows.
Do not expect anything.
Do not let your mind become clouded with what everything should feel like.
Simply open yourself and be receptive to whatever you might sense. If you are having difficulties or feel blocked, stop, calm yourself, and try again later.
If you push to hard when you are not ready, you could block your sensing abilities until it becomes extremely difficult to succeed.
There are many clues that you can look for to know if you are succeeding.
You may feel a pulse that is different from your own heartbeat.
This sensation can be very uncomfortable until you get used to it.
Don't panic or try to shut it out; you might succeed, and it will be that much harder the next time to sense anything.
You might also become more aware on a visceral level
You may begin to experience "thoughts" or emotions that are not your own, but seem to convey a perspective on the world of energies around you, or general earth philosophy.
You may not feel anything at the time, and come away disappointed, only to have a meaningful dream in which you receive these things from the earth, or you might afterward be able to sense the earths energies.
Or you can experience a combination of the above items, or something completely different that isn't listed.
Of course, the more you practice this, the better you will become.
This is one of the first steps toward achieving a deeper understanding of the world around you, as well as beginning communication with various beings in Nature.
As stated above, this general technique can be applied to many different things to sense energy flows and begin communication.
This exercise can also be used to sense energy flows tied to a specific area.
A note of caution: As with many things Druidic, this has an element of danger. Try to be careful in choosing your first (whatever) to sense.
There are plants, animals, and places that for whatever reason have become tainted or corrupted, as well as beings that due to maltreatment have become hateful toward humans.
If you open yourself up to being receptive to one of these, you can experience anything from mild discomfort to intense injury.
There are also beings that just do not care to be responsive; if you have repeated failures with a particular (whatever) it might be wise to try something else, which might be more responsive.
Once you begin succeeding in this exercise, the extended awareness it brings can be intoxicating, so please practice caution in your exercises.
