An Inspiring Moment at the Supermarket

from Annie B. Bond, Care2’s Healthy Living (link)

My local supermarket was very busy Sunday afternoon, and with relief I found a short line at the checkout counter, just one man. The conveyor belt was piled high with his food. I started taking stock, to decide when to put up the divider and add my food, when I noticed his food was all fruits and vegetables, but mostly fruit. Deciding the mix wasn’t quite right for shopping for a special event, I blurted out

“Wow, you have a healthy diet!?

He smiled back at me and said two words, and they are an inspiration:

He said, "I’m lucky!"

His answer was instant, there was no dissembling, and he wasn't being gratuitous in any way. I was so touched at his genuine gratitude for what life has given to him, and at how aware he so obviously was that others are not so lucky.
